My Roadsport exhaust was trashed in a race last season. I have bought a second hand one, which is now fitted. Does anyone know whether a brand new exhuast offers more power when new, than one that has done a few seasons, say, ie do they deteriorate with age? I'm trying to avoid buying new (£600 v £150 for a second hand one!)but obviously in racing evry little helps!

Thanks chaps.

The packing in an exhaust generally deteriorates with age, that means the gas is freer-flowing and that generally means more power.

On the downside, it will be noisier and if you want a catalytic one it may be inefficient or contaminated, failing an MOT.

I think that McMillan Motorsport do a non-cat exhaust (for non-road use) for the 1600k series Caterham for about £200, they were asked to look at alternatives to the £650 one when they were getting 'broken' during Graduates races. I think that the lack of a CAT adds a couple of bhp, but more the fact that it doesnt cost the Earth if it gets broken.

Edited to add - aha... if you are in Roadsports then you have to stick with the Caterham one... sorry
