SLRs,dry sumps,disappearing oil and feeling worried !
Discussion
Previously I have posted here asking advice about the problem of checking the oil, loosing oil pressure, and all that stuff. The main outcome was to keep adding cos it would be chucked out into the catch tank. So I did , and to back it up I got someone who knew what to do to check. ANd all was good.........for a while.
The problem now is that the oil seems to be dissapearing. There is no leak, but it seems to keep using it. The rate at which it is using it seems to be about half a litre to every 200/300 miles. And tonight (this is the worrying bit) whilst checking the pressure (happily sitting at 4.0) after starting it I noticed that if you put your hand next to it when warming up it soon got covered in oil ! That really worried me. Once warm it was as clear as a bell. So the question is - am I worrying about something that they all do, or, am I watching the complete failure of the wee beastie ?

Did you post under a different name? Just looked to get more info...
Anyway, that level of consumption isn't normal IME. Are you def checking the oil the same way both times? And how do you know it's def 0.5l (not sure you can measure that definitively without draining it?)?
It might be worth a visit to a specialist at some point. But I might be inclined to try getting some more data first...presumably pressures are ok etc?
PS When you say "next to it", do you mean the exhaust?

Posted under samurikid. Next to the Exhaust. And I think I will ask an expert as well , just felt like having a moan.
The oil consumption is not really accuraTE, but it is enough to give me a headache.
The oil coming out of the exhaust is weird, but as I say it does clean up dramatically when warm. Ooh yes and the other thing it has started is that it is fluffing at 6000 revs, but is fine after.
Any further thoughts ?

Hi - Not very scientific but I checked my oil last week (in SLR). Waited till warm - switched off engine and checked the level. It was on the low end of the dip stick so I stuck in 0.5l oil.
Now when I start the engine I get an oily spray from the exhaust. Goes when warm but I suspect its a bit overfilled. Didnt do this before but cant say for certain as I didnt check. However there is a mark on the drive where the car was so I think its new.
Hope that helps!

Are you sure that the stuff on your hand and from the exhaust isn't the engine running very rich when cold and its unburnt fuel? Maybe a mapping session is required if you run a mappable ECU?
Was thinking this too.And with it fluffing its lines higher up, I wonder if a sensor may have gone awol or something.
Worth getting it looked at I'd say.
It isn't easy to check the oil level in a dry sumped car - it starts falling the moment the car is turned off.
If it is any help, I used to have SLR #42 and it spat oil out of the collector pot despite Ratrace sorting out breathers etc etc.
I just got used to cleaning the rear of the engine bay as it was continually getting covered in a very fine spray of oil.

Well on a day like today there really is no excuse to be sitting on your a**e and not going out for a proper blat - so I thought just fill it with oil , and go out a have fun. It is still fluffy at about 5500 revs but you just have to forget about it and get on! It is the only wway to travel !
So oil or not - it flew , and I am smiling again - so cheers everybody - until it blows up - I will just keep chucking it in !
B1368 - awesome !
