Hi Guys

Been looking at ways into motorsport and been considering the Caterham Academy. Has anyone done it or is doing it and could give some feedback?

Cheers

Richard

Yes lots of us on here have. If you do a search you will get some of the background. There are several options. Worth searching posts on www.roadsports.co.uk and checking www.graduates.org.uk for more information on one alternative.

The academy provides a great experience that you can share with novices across the board. I loved my year, however, it can be quite pricey. The downside is you don’t get as many events and some people feel the sprints are a waste of time, as they only want to do the circuit racing. A lot of people go straight in Grads which also has a hand-holding element for new drivers.

You certainly wont regret doing the academy that’s for sure. Got any specific questions?

Yep did the academy 2005 (with H) Good fun. There are much cheaper ways to go racing but then you do get a new car. Swings and roundabouts really

I did the academy because I didn't have a clue about how to get into motorsport. If you can be bothered going to a load of race meetings and talking to people you might well find a better option

I am considering doing the Academy in 2008 and also welcome opinions from those that have gone before me.

I don't have any experience of circuit racing, but used to compete in a few sprints and hillclimbs on motorbikes about a dozen years ago.

I haven't even done any trackdays.

I expect that a budget of £25,000 will be required to complete the Academy year, as I would need to source a trailer, race suit, tow vehicle etc.

The alternative is simply to buy an R300 or R400 and do a few trackdays and the occasional sprint or hillclimb.

Suggestions on a postcard please, to the usual address.

I did the Academy in 2000. I was not one of the people drawn into racing - I prefer sprints and hillclimbs. I like the intense burst of adrenalin / concentration of speed events compared to racing. However, if I'd allowed myself to be persuaded to do Graduates I think I would have learned to enjoy it much more

If you know you want to get into racing, then probably better to go into Graduates. If you want to do sprints/hillclimbs, probably better to buy a superlight and just enter some sprints/hillclimbs.

If you don't know what you want to do, and you want some hand holding, the Academy is very highly recommended. I had a great time but with hindsight it would have been better (cheaper) for me just getting a superlight - which I did afterwards

Bear in mind that if you've ever had a competition license you will not be allowed to do the Academy

The difference between a trackday/sprint/hilclimb and racing is cavenous. None of them compare to the feeling after a race.
