Right what to buy.
Discussion
Hi. Right new to the forum but here's a standard question.
Its going to be a budget of £15-£25K but I'd spend less if I didn't need to.
I'd like a road legal track car in order to learn how to drive properly and scare friends and family. I'd quite like it to be a seven and the caterhams seem best although dear but the neatest type of seven by far.
Its gotta be road legal so that I can use it if I can't commit to a track day as often as I'd like but it needs to be something that I can use to learn to drive properly on the track. I'd like to be able to adjust to setup a bit for fun to change how it drives and learn a bit about that side of things.
I'd like it to be not totally completely bonkers or it'll be too much to get to grips with but still I really don't want to be thinking "I wish I'd bought a faster one" in 6 months.
I don't need it to be really *shiny* but the new prices seem almost like good value compared to the second hand stuff which seems pricey. (I don't mind building at all)
Its great that the depreciation is low but how come the 2nd hand prices are so high? Is is good value to get a new 150hp roadsport or superlight kit?
Is it worth going new to get the benefit of the new metric chassis and ford engines?
Any reason why I wouldn't get an SV if I could?
Thanks!

Second hand prices are high, because most cars have had lots of goodies fitted, which if speced from new would have pushed the price up.
The Ford engine cars are good, but you will get more for your money spec wise by buying second hand. I do a lot of track days, and its a fact on a track, sometimes the car will get damaged, ie if you have a trip into the gravel, scratches etc. So having a brand new car would make me nervous.
Don't really see any advantage in metric chassis. On the SV front, if you need one get one, I prefer the standard chassis, as I keep my car on a trailer in a single garage, and an SV or CSR wouldn't fit. Do a search on www.blatchat.com, plenty of advice on the L7Club site.
I would love a new car with the Duratec engine, but my R300 does me fine, as the car is a second car and a toy

Great, thanks. What's a decent R300 going to be?
I'm off up to the Caterham dealer in Caterham today to try a milder and a hotter version to see what I want. I would like to buid a car up but I guess 2nd hand is the smarter choice. What sort of weight/hp would be a good choice I wonder..

Eoin,
The SV is bigger all round; wider in the body and longer in the wheelbase, so more room for people and luggage but not quite so nimble. Most people prefer the snug fit of the standard car unless they rally need the SV.
Not sure exactly where you are, but the Lotus7Club meets at the Gribble in Oving on the second Wednesday of the month and the 5 Bells in Chailey on the last Thursday. New members and visitors are always welcome and plenty of cars for you to look over.
