Oil Level on 1400SS

Have just checked the oil level on my SS and am a bit confused



I let the engine warm up and then checked the oil level, to my suprise it was only just showing on the dipstick



I checked again when the engine had cooled down and the oil level had risen to about half way up the dipstick



What is the correct procedure when checking the oil?



It is a wet sump and I have the standard yellow dipstick with the notch cut out



Another question, how much oil would you expect to go through whilst on the track, 3x20 min sessions ?



What compression would you expect to see using a good quality screw in type tester ?
