Not wishing to 'chav' up the Caterham or anything... But I reckon the smaller plates that several owners run with on the front really make the car look that bit more aggressive and certainly suit it better... The standard ones look a tad cumberswome don't you think?

Does anybody know the legal stance on dimensions, letter size etc. or is it likely to be a similar story to the Cat- make sure the standard is on for MOT?

I have asked in a couple of local driving accessory shops but with no answer as yet- and none of them would be able to make one up.

Also what's the story on stickered ones across the top of the nose-cone?

Any tips would be welcome...

Cheers

I have run a small plate on the front of an Elise for a few years without incident. I expect you are right about the MOT. The plate is certainly not legal although I believe the penalties are pretty minor (small fine, no points) so consequently the police don't really bother about it. I know quite a few Elise owners don't even have front plates fitted although most carry one in the boot so they can claim it's just fallen off!

You probably won't be able to buy the smaller plate or stick on plates from the likes of Halfords. Last time I tried you needed the registration documents and two forms of ID (more than you need to open a bank account!)and they only do standard plates. The internet is a different matter. Somewhere like Fancyplates will do you pretty much anything you want, you just have to tick a box that says not for road use.

When I bought my R300, it came with a self-adhesive numberplate on the nose which apparently is not road legal.

I've recently been bought a personal plate as a present. I've ordered another self-adhesive front plate - pre-1973 style with 3/4 size text from fancyplates through their show plates section. I've also ordered a road legal pair for long distance drives.

Forgot to say, if you do order a plate from them you have to say you want a stick on one in the comments box.

also, i would not worry about getting proper 'legal' plates as well

mine has just sailed thru an MoT with 3/4 sticky on the nose and a 3/4 square on the back

I have a 6" x 1" plate on my SLR. It's in silver type on a black background. I've never had it queried. The 'offence' caries a non endorsable £30 fine, unless you get caught 3 times in which case the DVLA may confiscate the number and give you a Q plate. This may affect resale for some fussy buyers though....
