T-shirts, cufflinks, mugs maybe (I got this when I bought a slightly used car from them - also got harnesses and 500 quid off. Had to pay my own road tax mind, and fill it up as it was empty).

Doubt you'll get money off a new one.

Just ask, they can always say no.

Firstly, I know sonmeone who's waited nigh on a year for his C400 - the build date keeps getting revised - I am aware there were cooling problems with the racecars and I'd hazard a guess that this impacted the roadcar development.

Secondly, I enquired about a discount for one of the K series Superlight runouts - they virtually laughed in my face.

Heard recently that they had more than just cooling issues with the race cars. So much for the Ford being more reliable than the Rover

Also, I don't think it was you asking them for a discount that made them laugh at you

Bear in mind the cooling on a caterham race car has absolutely no relevance to a road or trackday car. The engine spec is also entirely different between C400 (race car) and R400 (road car), so please hold off torpedoing it until it's at least been launched type

Murph755 - what other issues have you heard? I'd heard about race car cooling issues (now fully resolved I believe), but thought that reliability was good?

I'd heard that the sump design was poor initially (baffles) and that engines suffered oil starvation. Also heard that this ended up in some cars being sidelined, AND that this too had been fixed.

Not torpedoing anything. I love the marque, and it's good to see them continuing to improve the breed through racing, just as they did with the K

Incidentally, I think both cooling and oil starvation issues (assuming they were real ) are relevant to road cars. Caterham learnt this with the K, and is correcting stuff here it seems. All of which is good.

Interesting. Hyperion have been developing/running Merrick's car, as I am sure you are aware, Stuart. This runs the same spec engine as the road C400 - in fact it is a road C400...but it still has had the overheating problems I mentioned earlier. My comments were specifically targetted to the C400. I don't have any knowledge about the difference in spec between C400 and R400 though - any chance you could let us know what they are?

As I say, Barry E has an order in for a road car and that order is for a C400, not an R400....so Caterham have either renamed the model (wouldn't be the first time!) or there are some wires crossed here....

I guess your comments on cooling are related to the overheating caused by the slipstreaming effect? True enough, this won't affect road or trackday cars (unless the driver is behaving like an idiot!)

Mark,
it is now called R400, but may not have a cosworth engine as I understand it but as I am only 1 year down the line on this project anything can change including the price. No news on problems with current road car engine and I believe it has completed 12,000m testing. Fingers crossed for early feb delivery.

Rubystone,

Merrick's car is a race C400 - not a road car. The road car is being sold as an R400, not a C400.

As far as I'm aware the engine spec of the road R400 has not been released yet, but it *is* different. I understand it wont be on roller barrel throttle bodies for one thing.

And yes, slipstreaming is the primary cause of the cooling problems the C400 suffered from at the start of the year. This has now been resolved, and the current development is making it less aesthetically horrifying. The issue with oil was due to a manufacturing fault in an early batch of sump pans - the manufacturer recalled them and it was immediately resolved.

Well ok…..there’s a blab on Ministers web site about being the official rebuilder along with tips in running the CSR/C400 engines, but that that!!

At the end of the day Caterham advertised the new R400 with a Cosworth engine, its still on pricing lists as having a Cosworth engine all currently on there web site (go see), Caterham Sales told me it was a Cosworth engine, its on my order form as a Cosworth engine (see site-it's still there), it was in the press as having a Cosworth engine, and it’s was mentioned on several web site’s as having a Cosworth engine

Having lumped £1k deposit way back in July for a R400 with a Cosworth engine, I would a little p-ssed to find something else installed wouldn’t I. Sorry don’t think that the case, it would cause CC to much grief

From CC site.......

"First in the queue to own the car is rock legend Chris Rea, a long standing Seven owner. "When I heard about plans to introduce a replacement for the old R400, I simply had to have one!" commented Rea. "The combination of Cosworth power and the Series 3 chassis delivers an adrenaline rush and a level of performance that I cannot resist."

I guess Chris Rea first in queue, first to get his money back laugh

Strange, I could have sworn it had a number plate on it when Dave showed it to me - admittedly that was before it had seen a track though....

Bafty, don't believe all you read in press releases, I was being vague for a reason but YOU should look into the engine choice for the R400 as things DO change, contact CC if you want it from the horses mouth. Their website is carp as most people will observe.
By the way Chris Rea is not first in the queue, that dubious honour falls to someone on this forum (so I'm told).:confused
