Thought I'd take the opportunity for a blast in the 7. Unfortunately when overtaking a car and moving back in I managed to hit something on the road under braking. Not sure what it was, cats eye sitting proud, who knows but I saw the front of the car lift momentarily accompanined by a big bang.

Couldn't see anything dropping behind and kept an eye on the temp and pressures and all looked ok. Got home 10 minutes later and my worst fears were realised. Oil dropping from the bottom of the engine, not much granted, but it's definately lunched the sump I would say.

Anyone know the best place to take it, Caterham, Minster or an Indie???

Where are you in UK. If you drove it and no sig press drop you might be ok. It is a relatively simple job to change a sump pan BUT need to check engine carefully for damage so a specialist might be best if you are unsure.

Thanks, I'm in Hants.

Had a very quick look under the car as far as I could without being able to jack it up. Seems to have smacked the leading bolt area on the left hand side of the sump plate. Can't see any other damage but who knows what lurks in the dark.

My thoughts are to try and get it to Minister unless anyone can recommend someone closer by??

Fingers crossed it's something straight forward. Cost is a pain, but more about missing the opportunity to hoon about in it.

As long as the pressure held up you should be fine to get any 7-competent garage to fit a new sump and check other weak areas like the filter holder (assuming it's a K?). I used to use Gerard at Virtual7 -www.virtual7.fsnet.co.uk/ - for my prep. Probably about an hour from you, it was about 80 mins from me in Winchester.

A similar thing happened to me near Stockbridge when I had my Caterham, unfortunately I ripped the filter holder off and the oil all came out very rapidly indeed - I switched off ASAP and the engine was fine, but I was stranded!

Many thanks. Had the car collected today and it's off for a visual inspection at a nearby garage.

If it's any more serious than the sump pan then it'll be off to Minister I guess. Fingers crossed it's simple. Is there such a think as a sump guard for the K or is it just a matter of raising the ride height slightly?

Still....what a car!!

smashed the sump on mine couple of months ago, only just got it back after a full re-build. £4ks worth....

Anyway...

After a 'sensitive' call to my insurers they covered the whole lot (minus small excess) as "accidental damage" worth putting that call in.

Feels great to be back behind the wheel too!!

I hope you haven't hurt my old car too much!!! I hope it isn't too bad, but if it is, at least your insurance should pay up.

Apparently not......just needs a new sump. I say just....they've yet to give me the price which could still make me wince.

Bit of a relief though!

Yes, I damaged my sump and claimed as impact damage - successfully. Incidentally, my friends at Minister rebuilt my SLR engine and also sourced me a nearly new motorsport sump for a lot less than £560. If they don't have one, call the race teams, Hyperion, Taylors Foundry, Arylian, Parker etc and see whether they have a spare secondhand one.
