Starting problems.
Discussion
Bugger! I have developed an intermittent starting fault.
It's happened a twice since I had a battery switch fitted and a service 4 weeks ago. I assumed the first time it was an issue with the immobiliser being thrown by the battery being disconnected. I got as far as checking for a spark (there wasn't one) before I had another go and it fired. I'd had plenty of goes at starting it, then left it for 10 minutes and it started fine. The last time was similar, the AA man was nearly there and I went out to the road (in the rain) to wait for him and tried it again.
I can hear the fuel pump and it turns over well, it also runs perfectly when it starts.
Millwood muttered about the crank sensor when I spoke to them (and I've just worked out where that is thanks to Angus & Tessa's site) and want to get it in to have a look, but I'd like to sort it myself if possible.
On a related note it has occasionally in the past started but refused to idle for a few minutes until the orange light on the dial has gone out. It then runs perfectly. Is this the start of what has happened now?

No, the larger orange led towards the top of the tacho. There's a row of three at the bottom - green, red and blue that I think you mean.
(BTW it's a 2002 1.8 140bhp k-series.)
ETA: According to the manual it's the change up light...

Ah ok, I don't have one of those

that's weird -- my 2002 SV-VHPD has a purple LED there. seeing it "on" until warming suggests a loose earth somewhere that once warm makes a good connection.
But it happens on hot starts too. I spent some time yesterday jiggling wires and reconnecting wires to no avail (But it did start perfectly, just wouldn't run.) I'm going to clean the crank sensor and IAVC today...
Luckily I like talking to myself
Right, the earth seems to be fine. I've cleaned the crank sensor and IACV which has made no difference, but if I disconnect the IACV the car will run even if the shift light is still on? All very confusing, and so far it hasn't refused to start I hate intermittent problems

I know I should be asking on blatchat, but my membership lapsed...
