Was at Snet on Tuesday in R400, very hot day. Two issues cropped up...........the occasional low oil pressure light and stack message which went as quickly as they came with normal pressure coming back on dash. Secondly, and later in the day (first session after lunch) difficulty finding gears, especially moving second to third. Could these both be due to thinning oil??

Assuming you have the correct grade engine and g/box oil in the car, and that the car is dry sumped, I wouldn't worry about it too much!

if i was running a K car (easy to get paranoid about oil starvation) then first thing id do is ditch the awful VDO sensor for something a bit better quality and also mount it off the engine on a flexible isolated piece of oil hose. Another example of the way in which these cars should really have been improved by now after so many years. The OP sender is one thing that you want to be able to trust with your life.

When i ran my slr, despite regular oil changes and checks, the oil pressure guage was always all over the shop. It used to drive me completely nuts to the point where i just decided to forget about it completely and never ever to look at it. Wasted journeys down to dartford, blank expresisonless face standing over my engine after a compression test... nothing could explain the erratic readings. Of course soon after this i really did completely lose oil pressure and lunched the engine good and proper through McLeans. Good old VHPD.... happy memories as they say.

Well, you live and learn i guess. With my duratec car I monitored the oil pressure quite carefully on the first few trackdays. Solid as a rock regardless of slicks and corners. Never had to look at it again. When i first contacted Dataspares about my mychron dash installation and told them i was trying to wire up a VDO for oil pressure for a slick shod track car they almost laughed at me !

Agree on oil pressure (is it dry sumped?).

Gearbox - how old is it? How much use?

It could be a the first signs of a problem, or it may just need an oil change. Perhaps speak to road race transmissions.

Also, how do you change gear? I was once told to make sure you change using a very definite H movement when going through the box. It's easy to knacker the selector forks (IME).

Thanks Jackal and Murph. Yep, dry sumped. Had new rings put in about 6-8 track days ago. Must admit, not a concious effort to ensure H movement when changing. Will get it looked at with engine and g`box oil change.

Where on the circuit did the low pressure come on? Coram is the normal favourite for surge, and if it's happening there I'd suggest you've too little oil or the pickup is clogged. If it's happening in random places then I'd guess sensor fault.
