Just test driven a Caterham and very much enjoyed the experience except for getting splattered by stone chips. Is this usual? It had what looked to be the standard mudguards - should they have mudflaps? Is this normal and party of the 'experience' to be 'enjoyed'? - or was I just unlucky with the roads used?

If by "standard" you mean cycle wings, then you will get the odd stone being thrown up but it sounds like you must have driven on some particularly poor surfaces. Did the car have a windscreen or an aero? If a windscreen, and it had doors then it's pretty unusual for a stone to make it into the cockpit in normal driving.

When you say "peppered" and "sprayed" how many stones are you talking about?

I occasionally get a piece of gravel flicked over the top of the windscreen and into the cockpit, but not often and only on gravelly roads.

Thanks to all! It was quite severe - country roads but nothing out of the ordinary like new tarmac etc - the car had a windscreen but no side panels. Otherwise really enjoyed the drive once I'd got used to the narrowness of the pedalbox!

Quite normal for me as I usually drive without the sidescreens & always have any 'ballast' wear Wiley goggles as on country lanes after a good shower there is tons of gravel on the road and a fair amount of large stones come in to the passenger's side.
With the sidescreens on it's not a problem.

All part of the fun
