Hi,

First post & I'm in need of a little help.

A few weeks go I bought a 2000 Caterham Roadsport and it has been fantastic :cloud9: but after a week of bliss it developed problem with the speedo, it now reads 0 regardles of roadspeed :(.

Ok I thought, I'm not too handy with the spanners but here is a chance to learn a bit more about my car.

I removed the speedo cable from the angle drive & the angle drive from the gearbox. Easy I think, the short section of cable from the angle drive to the gearbox has sheared. So, new one duly ordered from Caterham (who told me it's a quill pin) and then fitted this afternoon:thumbup:.

Drive off with big grin and the speedo works....for about 10 yards or so.

Back up on the ramps & the new quill pin has sheared just like the last one:weeping:.

When I put bits of the (broken) quill in each end of the angle drive it seems to work fine, turning one end by hand rotates the other quite freely. Then putting a drill on the angle drive end of the main speedo cable & rotating it gives a reading on the speedo.

So I can't see any obvious problem:scratchchin:.

Any experienced Caterham people out there that can offer some advice?

Thanks!

Doesn't help much but I'd call Caterham. These things are renowned for breaking with regularity (though yours would seem to have broken with more regularity than normal ). I wonder if you have one of a bad batch, or were just unlucky...from what you've said you've tested it doesn't look like anything's tight enough to cause the breakages.

PS Permanent fix - buy a Stack dash with magnetic speedo sensor Expensive, but a great way to justify a purchase

Or get a bicycle speedo such as Sigma BC1200.
