Watts linkage vs radial arms
Discussion
Educate me please ….
Car currently has Watta linkage , but makes a huge row over bumps from the rear.
Was thinking about changing all the rod ends, but over on BC that all seem to say radial arms are way better….
Why?
What are the +ve and -ve of each system , for a road car that does occasional track work

The watts linkage maintains the axles (wheels) in a parallel position as the suspension moves up and down at either side. That translates to a more lateral stability over bumps, and more neutral balance under cornering. In the Caterham it also changes the anti-squat behaviour (reduces it I believe). The radius arm is a much simpler design that basically does the same job but in a less refined way. Radius arms are sometime chosen over Watt linkage for their simplicity, and when used on smooth tracks with stiffer set-ups, they can deliver very predictable handling and even a useful degree of rear axle steering. It's the sort of thing where your preference would be for what you were used to.
