Charging light problem
Discussion
Hi, wonder if anyone can help please.
My car is an S3 with a 1.6 K series engine, 2010.
Decided this week to get my car ready for MOT and spring (all was fine when I last used her in Nov). When I start her up I now have the Red battery/ charging light permanently on (on the rev counter).
The battery voltage is 12.6 not running and goes to 14.2 when running so this suggests the alternator is charging the battery.
I have checked the 2 smaller wires on the back of the alternator, the righthand red/white wire which I beleave comes from the ECU gives 11.2v with ignition on at the plug (0v with ignition off). The Left hand brown/yellow wire which comes from the ignition/ Battery light give 9.6v with ignition on at the plug. When the engine is running I'm getting 6.5v coming from the left (ign/ battery) terminal on the alternator.
Would 6.5v be enough to extinguish the ignition light or do you think I have a problem with the alternator.
For reference, if I disconnected the 2 small wires and start the engine I still get 14.2v at the battery so is the a self exciting alternator.
Any thoughts.
