Hi All - I'm expecting the kit to be delivered next week. I'm a student of Chris Collin's 420 build blog, and I noticed that he's had a few different parts that needed to be replaced, and that Caterham were very good at getting them exchanged. However, he also had to send the chassis back to the factory after he found some defects with the floors.

Just wondered for those people on here that have been through this process, is it a common thing to have chassis build/fittings problems? Anything in particular that I should look out for?

And do I need to worry about not spotting them until after Ivor has dropped it off and I've signed for it?

Thanks,
J.

Before I read the detail of your post, I was going to regale my story of chassis (in days of old = 2001). Basically it had quite a lot of cosmetic damage to the powder coating underneath. Looked like it had been kicked about a bit on a concrete floor. Not easy to get to see when delivered unless you pop it straight on some stands and look underneath, but well worth doing. It was a long time ago though!

OMG that's dreadful! Well as I understand it, the delivery chap (Ivor I gather his name is) lifts the chassis with you and you place it straight on to axle stands, so I guess I'll be able to have a good look at it. I also think that back then they may not have done quite so much of the preparation as they do now? So my chassis will come with the dash fitted, gauges installed, brake/fuel lines already installed, body work attached. Is that very different to yours when it was delivered?

Thanks,
J.

Sounds like just the same, although by bodywork I assume you mean the aluminium panelling?

Yeah, the panelling affixed to the chassis. For some reason I had the impression that they used to turn up as a bare chassis...if that was the case, it was obviously before 2001! wink

I don't think that has ever been the case, it's a skilled job and involves welding to join panels.

Looks like today is the big day, have fun!

It's here!! smile No obvious signs of anything wrong, but I haven't had a chance to really get underneath. So excited...and frustrated as work commitments away means I can't start anything yet. I do intend to do an inventory ASAP though smile Love the colour!!

I gave mine a quick visual check, but nothing more.

The first thing I did do is take an inventory, there will be bits missing, usually because the part was out of stock. Annoyingly Caterham don't provide a list of known shorts, so you can't tell if they were waiting for the part or it had been forgotten.

Also, I logged which box everything was in, this took a while but made it easier to find when I needed it.

I did raise some shortages with Caterham, but either they knew I was still waiting for it or told me I already had it (they photograph the entire kit and were able to prove that I had what I was looking for - doh!). In fact nothing at all was actually missing, but I did have to wait for some key items - 5 months for a cooling pipe! - I sourced my own to keep moving.

None of it will fit perfectly, but I eventually found a way, it's part of the fun.

I really enjoyed my build and learnt loads along the way.

Good luck with yours (especially fitting the diff)

Thanks mate...yeah, I think it'll be the difference between lego and old mechano...with Mechano there was always some figuring out to do because the instructions often left some stuff unexplained wink

Yes that's correct...Volcano Red with gloss black triple stripes and graphite pin stripe smile

I can't get you pics at the moment...I'm unfortunately away abroad until after Christmas so the kit is just waiting for me to come and start it...which probably won't be until January frown

And these are notoriously hard to get sorted after the build, endless snagging that can really dent the ownership experience. So I'd be happy to run it for a year or so for you to get all the snagging done. All at no extra charge of course!
