I have a Mazda CX-5. fwd, petrol and torque box. it's rating is fine for towing a Caterham - 1800 for trailer and 3500 for MAM.
however, whilst cars in the past had even less torque than the Mazda I do fear what towing a trailer and 500kg Caterham would do to the auto box as well as the engine. I'll be happy cruising gently and expect a bit of hunting & low gear selection. just a handful of trips a year to the tracks further away. Any comments? Am I over thinking it and being soft?
