Shere Hill Climb in CSR 260 vid + Insta360 camera
Discussion
Thought I'd share my experiences of doing the Shere Hill Climb (4th Sep) for the first time ...
(Similar post made to blatchat, so some may have seen before).
For those that don’t know - this is a very relaxed annual event taking place near Guildford with around 250 cars making the mile long run up the hill. The road is closed, but the event is non-competitive, not timed and 60mph speed limit is in place, so it's really all about the spectacle and having fun.
Each 'competitor' has three runs up the hill and the whole thing seems to run with military precision. In between runs, participants are encouraged to make their cars as available to the public as possible, with bonnets open, etc. So, in between hill runs, a steady stream of visitors came by my car and I spent a fair bit of time checking out the incredibly diverse range of other cars.
My day was also partly about experimenting with a 360 deg camera I'd bought a while back (and then left in a drawer) …
Again, for anyone who doesn't know ... a 360 degree camera can record a full 360 view - aka google street view, but as a movie as well as just pictures. So, you don't really 'point' the camera at anything you just 'position it'. The camera then records everything and you then decide what views / tracks / zooms / you want later, as part of the post-post processing edit.
I recorded my 3 runs up the hill by attaching camera to car with a suction mount, then also recorded some footage walking about the site. As it turned out, I messed up the last run and the walkabout footage by inadvertently pressing 'time lapse'. Interesting effect, but not much fun to look at, so I didn't use this. To produce the movie, I created multiple mini-movies from the raw 360 footage, then stiched them together as cut scenes in the free version of vid tool ACDSee Luxea.
Here's finished vid based on the 1st run (+ using other correctly recorded footage)
Overall - what a brilliant event! ... taking part, getting up close to many spectacular motors and getting a bit more experience with the 360 camera. Very chilled. I'll def be back next year + will try and improve my skills with the camera (inc not pressing the wrong buttons ).
Any comments / suggestions, let me know
cheers, Andrew.

That's very interesting and looks like a good event. I didn't realise, I actually live near there so must make it next year.
Incidentally you can take the footage from your insta 360 and export it as a 360 surround file into YouTube and then the viewer can also pan around, it's quite a nice effect.
Here's an example of what you can do. Depending on your app you may need to add the 360 metadata to the file to make the YouTube uploader realise it's a surround image but it's pretty easy to do.

Yeah, it was great fun. Wondering around + gawping at the other cars, stalls and live band etc was pretty good too.
Thanks v much for the 360 youtube footage pointer, hadn't thought of tthat ... I'll take a look. Would probably be interesting to see a complete run in 360 view, without the interruptions of the cut scenes. Could be viewed with a VR headset too, for the full immersion effect! (though not stereoscopic).

Having seen signage for this a few times, I wondered a) how it could happen, and b) how to have a go.
I guess the OP's post answers a) - it's basically a show run, and solves b) too, more for polishers. Shame..

A hill-climb with a 60mph speed limit?! Jesus wept.
Yup it's definitely a non-competitive show run. The focus is on fun and giving the public access to the paddock to view cars and hill runs, as well as raising £ for charity. I really enojyed this low-key event + low risk of damage to car helped! Won't be for everyone of course .FYI the very popular Hop Hill Climb has a similar ethos I think.

This is the software you need to add the metadata btw.
cheers

With the insta 360 on a pole behind the car you can also do these sort of video game type views which are fun! (Obviously make sure your mount is really good!)

PS if you’re ever up for a Sunday morning drive from Guildford drop me a line

Thanks for the note on the software, I'll have a go at creating a 360 run of Shere when I get a free mo.This is the software you need to add the metadata btw.

I love the 360 deg footage! We were in the paddock almost opposite you (red 370z) and went up the hill a few cars behind.
We too had some really enjoyable runs up the hill. Not competitive, just fun. A grand day out.
I like that you drove there with the full windscreen then switch out to the wind deflector. Sensible!

Very impressed with the 360 footage and equally so with your editing skills. I live quite close by and entered for the first time with a couple of my children along to try and keep me from acting like a complete hooligan. Not much luck I’m afraid as the 620 has brought out my inner child in abundance!!
Really lovely low key and friendly event.
I’ve attached videos of me failing to exercise restraint off the line!
