Cheking oil level on a 1.6 Sigma

Not wishing to hijack another thread, please can someone tell me the correct way to check the oil level on a 2008 Sigma 1.6. It's ex-Academy car if that makes any difference.

I've read various conflicting bits of info, engine on, engine off, and to be honest the results always look very similar! Be good to know what the correct method is.

D'oh, I'd overthought that looking at forums and facebook pages rather than the CC website! Many thanks...and confirms I've actually been doing it right!
