Crystal Ball time : What will happen in 20 years time.....
Discussion
Asking as A kit car owner [Sylva J15) Will petrol be readily available and at what cost? Will our engines be able to run on it? Will internal combustion engined cars be allowed? Will the cost of ownership be out of reach for many people?.....Maybe classic cars will be easier to own as they will be granted ‘historic’ status but if you’ve got a fairly recently registered car you’ll have a few years before it will be ‘historic’. Do you think low volume/low annual mileage petrol engined cars will be given a special status?
I also wonder if petrol engined cars will be targeted by the wokies, will we find ourselves being spat at and harassed for destroying the planet?
I, selfishly, don’t think will mind as I’ll be in my mid 70’s in 20 years time!

In the seventies, when I first started tinkering with engines, fuel was going to run out in ten years time. We were all doomed to freeze in the looming ice age and things looked quite bleak for a teenager.
Roll on 50 years and we discover that the best cars and engines were still to be built. Oil companies only quoted their 'known resources' and there really was no practical limit to the amount of oil available beneath the earth's crust. The clean air act was so successful that the soot no longer threatened an ice age and it retreated into global warming.
So, without belittling the global warming issues we face today, I'm confident that there is a future for the internal combustion engine and fossil fuels. But I suspect the alternatives will make it a bit of a niche activity, just like riding a horse, or firing up a steam tractor, is today.

I do worry that the socially unacceptable aspect will rapidly escalate as more people move to EVs.
The speed limiter or ‘intelligent speed assist’ that will soon be fitted to all new cars is a worry too, as I think it will have the effect of making overtaking even more socially unacceptable than it appears to be at present.
And don’t get me started on dash cams. British society gets more like The Prisoner with every passing year.
