Size and make of tyres, live axle crossflow
Discussion
That tyre size looks right to me. 'Tis true that there aren't many tyres in that size and unfortunately, I don't think A021Rs are road legal now, however, CR6ZZs are: https://www.avontyres.com/en-gb/tyres/cr6zz?cartyp...
Hmm, tricky, thanks for the replies. I think those Avons are super expensive from what I can see.
What are you guys running. It's possible that the Michelin MXTs (I think) are original, so way past their best!
How illegal are A021Rs? Actually in contravention of Con & Use? Presumably an MoT failure?

AO21's have been illegal for a couple of years. European directive, think it was something to do with their ability to clear water, so having a prang whilst shod with them would probably void the insurance.
I'm using Academy tyres and am very pleased with them - feel that I'm back in my karting days.

I was wondering if it was actually a noise problem, but my memory is not that good!I'm using Academy tyres and am very pleased with them - feel that I'm back in my karting days.
Are your tyres the "AVONT" tyres on the caterham website?
Or actually I presume the Academy tyres on the AVon website

Yoko A539 in 185/60. I wonder how bad a 18.5mm drop in ride height would be?
As I’m sure you know, this is exactly what Classic Grads used to run. I don’t know how low the sump is on an x-flow but that always used to be the worry with the Vauxhall engine. You may find that the shock absorber bodies have extra grooves in them and you can increase the ride higher that way if necessary.
i've got a live axle, and used to run A021 in 185/70r13 (589mm diameter) but there are not many decent options in that size anymore.
for road use I either use 185/60r13 Yokohama A539's (552mm Diameter) or 195/55r15 in a Avon ZZS (577mm diameter)
for track use I use Avon ZZS 185/55r13 (530mm) diameter.
the other option I see used if wanting to keep on 13" is Avon ZZS 215/55r13 (559mm diameter)
no matter which tyres you end up on you are best getting the car set up for the tyres you are going to use in order to get the ride hieght and balance correct.

Thanks all for the contributions, most helpful.
Yes James, the tyres are suspected to be original for the car -1996. I will check whether academy tyres are road legal or not.
Caterbram: Regarding the half-shafts, I suspect they will be original and not uprated. But will investigate. I don't really want to go for fatter tyres, certainly not 215's on a LA car.
I had seen that Uniroyal rain expert 3s come in 175/70 which is ok on the ride height front, but a bit thinner! There seems to be mixed views on them. But perhaps there are other options in that size.
It'll all get re set up when I have the tyres and have had the dampers tested.

This what is needed by the MoT..
You should only accept tyres with NHS, Not for Highway Use or similar markings if they have an ‘E’ marking and a number contained within a circle. Adjacent to this circle, the sidewall must also be marked with a six digit number, which may be preceded by 75R or similar marking (see example below).

My Academy tyres are marked E4 on the sidewall and as far as I'm aware this makes them road legal.
Yep it looks like they are. For a while Avon carried on making the CR322 pattern specifically for the Academy which weren’t road legal, but it looks like they’ve made a new road legal academy tyre. These would be my choice.
I imagine Uniroyals would be a bit floppy in a 70 profile.
Looks like the ones on the Caterham website are a good price (despite being described as "Avont Acadamy" tyres) at £75 per corner plus shipping (£18 for 4). Obviously need to add local fitting to that. And if the website is to be believed, they have stock. Got a price elsewhere of £100 per corner which would include fitting, but no availability till the end of sept or oct.
