I've seen a post on the Japanese Caterham website that the manufacturer has stopped production of Sigma engined cars as that going forward only the Ecoboost (1L) engine will be available!

I must stress that the translation from Japanese to English could have completely changed the meaning of the message, but does anyone here know anything about this?

... I've got a 270 kit (UK) on order for the end of the year and I'm now worried that it's about to be changed to a 1.0L Ecoboost!

Regards

Dave

Well a/ it doesn't sound very likely (certainly for the uk) and b/ they'd have to modify your order with your consent to make such a big change to what you have agreed to buy.

I'd not sweat it!

I remember when they managed to squeeze the Ecoboost into the 7 a few years back - it wasn't an easy fit. I've seen a few done by engine builders since, but Caterham themselves haven't shown any interest.

That said, they'll probably have to move onto something other than the Sigma at some point, but I can't imagine it would affect your order. Caterham are known to stockpile engines!

Yes, Caterham verbally told me last week Ford were stopping supplying the Sigma engines and there are only a handful of build slots left. I imagine if you have already ordered one, it should be safe. Entry level will then be the 360. Residuals will be good on 270/310s now though!

It could be that the ecoboost is for the JPN market?

Imagine trying to fit a 1.6ltr Ecoboost into a Caterham - you'd have to be mental and probably end up with a massive Unicornlaugh

I can also confirm this. I’m in the process of buying a 420R and the dealer said that Sigma engines are moving out of production and it’s now only possible to order 360s, 420s and 620s. No more build slots are available for any Sigma-engined cars.

With respect to the demise of the Sigma engines. The relatively new 1600 , 270 and 310 cars still seem to have availability according to Caterham Car's latest website. It is strange as well that Caterham should use the sigma engine in their latest model (1600)
