I've seen it done with sporting trails cars, autotest specials etc. But I'm not sure about a whole car in a van?

It's absolutely a thing people do with Caterhams.

Main factor when buying a van is whether the car will go in with the rear wings on, because occasionally you will finish a race weekend and both rear wings will still be attached.

Back in my Fury track days, a pair of brothers both ran Fury's and used to arrive in Luton bodied trucks and used ladders as ramps.....

Pretty sure they were 7.5 ton rather than vans tho.

I'm very aware of race trucks, 7.5ton box vans and Luton's and the like as said.

I would have thought a caterham is wider than a van, it I've just measuree my narrowbody Westfield at 5ft1 or 1550m over the arches.

Sprinter and Transit at a quick Google at 1786mm at the door, with the Sprinter 1350mm between the arch's and a slightly wider 1390mm for the Transit.

So there we have it... No more to add!m, just here for the watch!

All good ideas.
I’m keen for a van rather than Luton box.
I can build up ramps over the arches Mainly it is finding a van with the widest clean rear door opening to allow car with wings attached.

laugh

What do people use to affix the rear wings if they are regularly coming off (for whatever reason!)?

Phunk hi.
Now that link was very useful.
I thought others would have been there before me.
Although please don't stop sending options.
Personally I'd prefer a Sprinter or Transit but it
comes down to rear apperture each time. I'm trying to avoid
Luton box van. I did see an Ex Ocado van at Rockingham once.
That was a half way house and did the job well.

My Dad used to go autotesting in the 70's/80's and one of his mates used to put his mini in an LT35 van.

Not much help here I know, but...

I guess compare width on spec sheet, and photos etc, of each van, draw up a little list. Maybe go to a van supermarket with a tape measure to confirm.

How wide is an caterham over the arches?

Nope....

Never going to happen...

Nobody has ever finished a caterham with rear wings still attached!

Just nylon nuts and bolts as these tend to shear before the rivnuts are pulled through the aluminium skin which happens when using metal fixings.

Yep, an L3H2 Boxer/Ducato/Relay will fit the Caterham in easily without one rear wing, and, with slight modification, fit the car in with both wings attached (handy for taking the car to the event! laugh ).

Don't get me wrong though, it is still tight. I would say 10-15mm clearance in total between both sides.

Yep nylon nuts are great. The race cars also generally use rivnuts all around rather than standard nuts too as they are quicker when putting new ones in.

Whoops! No nuts just nylon bolts into rivnuts.

I did exactly that for last few years of Caterham racing. Went for a Peugeot Boxer LWB van and as other people have pointed out rivnuts + nylock bolts are the way to go for attaching the rear wings. After you have taken wings off dozens of times you get faster at it and only adds 5mins to your loading time so not that much hassle. When the van is unmodified you only need to take off the passenger side rear wing.

The modification to fit car without taking off one of the wings is to grind off part of the seal that the rear door rubber sits on. Only as high as the rear wing will be. You don't have to take all of it off just leave enough for the rubber still to sit on. If you look closely at the picture of mine you should be able to see it.

Rest is pretty simple. Set of ramps, raised level either side to get over van wheel arches. Winch at the end to pull van in.

Van is tied down by ratchet straps front & back + on the sides around the rollcage.

Happy to provide more details if needed.

Also seen this done with
  • Sprinter - Have to take wings off
  • Peugeot Boxer MWB - car fits as 45 deg with nose off (tight fit!)
  • Citroen, Peugeot & Fiat vans are all identical vans.

Hi
Sorry just saw this. I have a Renalut LoLoader 3.5t van. The back opens up and I have two ramps and a small winch. Car goes in great - just two ratchet straps. Also have space for spare tyres, fuel etc and its a garage to keep the car in as well. In front of the car area I have a small living area with fridge, sofa and cooker. I don't sleep in it but it would pretty easy to change to make a bed. I use it for the Academy Champs and I'm the only one who has gone down this route rather than a trailer.

Message me if you want to know anymore.
