I’ve heard about barnby wheels cracking at the hub which , if you’re on a circuit , must have the potential to generally ruin your day fairly thoroughly. Does anyone know where or how to test them. It’s a shame cos they’re considerably lighter than the carbons.

There are two types, one with the original thinner arms and later ones with the wider arms. First thing to check is which version you have.

Yes, you can send them to MB for crack testing and refurbish. I had this done a while ago for a tatty second hand set I had. All good.

My observations is that if you were a racer and/or someone who is bouncing off curbs to get a better lap time, you are better off with something a little tougher. For me, a road and not a track curb bouncer, I'm sure they will be fine. They are super sexy and very light.

Funnily enough i spoke to Mike about this yesterday.
He said the later revised ones had MB stamped on them in between the bolt holes - i.e. if you imagined the cars had 8 bolt holes, MB is stamped on the face between the existing bolt holes. Mine don't but I am not fussed.

I am happy to believe Mike when he said the reputation has been borne from a faulty batch.

I had mine crack tested 7 years ago when I got them secondhand but they have seen very little road use so Mike said I don't need to have them tested again. There is no time bound limit on them just - just usage.

Crack testing is £35 per wheel. Can either send him the whole wheel (not tyre) or just let the air out of the tyres and remove the centre. He will provide new bolts for re-fit.

Someone recently told me if you hold the centre up on some string, tap the edges with a small hammer - if it rings all good, if it dongs all bad. Not done it so can't tell you what sound it should make or how effective the audio test is.

Thanks both. Think I’ll try the bong test first.

You'll want to wait a few hours after for the effects of that to wear off before testing your wheels.

Oh right. Was looking forward to that.
