I saw your sketches on the kit car thread, good job
I can't see how you can compete on weight and/or chassis stifness with the more intersting front end. You may fall foul of some SVA regs with the lights like that too
Have you got any calculations FEA etc ?? I'm currently getting some ideas together for a design of my own track day special so it would be interesting to compare notes

I do have other renderings with SVA abiding front lights, and they are not the ones you see in some of those renderings.....
I'm in the process of deciding if I will be building a prototype or not, but it all depends on the feedback I get on these designs, and if its worth spending all that money.!!!!.

My design would involve me building all the suspension from scratch, which would be a bloody pain if it didn't work as intended.
I'm trying to source hubs, brakes etc from a current design. There's quite a lot out there that would do the job
Any Idea what you're going to base yours on ?

My designs were based an the new Caterham svr, using that as a design parameter, but if you wanted, you could use any other seven replica chassis.......
I wouldn't design a new chassis because it would be more expensive to manufacture, but instead take an exhisting chassis and then place on top my new body design.
It's already expensive just to make new moulds for the new bodywork, I wouldn't want to get into designing a new chassis when I could find a decent one in the specialist car industry.
Maybe it will not have all your design specifications, but it won't cost you money,time, hassles and other to see the finished project through.
This could also turn out to be so expensive if you are not careful when planning....

The trouble is my chassis design is quite different to anything else currently on the market
I've built and repaired quite a few cars from different states of completion and disrepair, even made the odd fibreglass buck and I don't see how the designs are going to work out that expensive. Time consuming yes
Likewise with the chassis

Nice looking concepts.
I think the glass roof idea is good, don't know why nobody has developed a hard-top for the existing 7 - surely there's a market out there?
You're windscreen looks a bit dangerous though. The top is too close to the occupants heads. I suggest you move the whole windscreen forwards - keep the top in the same place as the production windscreen and move the bottom forwards to get the required angle.

The only problem is finding the right windscreen with the same curvature. The idea was to have an off the shelf Lancia Stratos replica windscreen, but I'm not sure it would fit the chassis, I will have to do my homework on this one......
On the Atom, yes I like the Ariel Atom concept and foresee an evolution of my seven concepts in that direction for the future...
A motorbike on wheels for the track, but with some weather protection.
So if you spotted some influence it was deliberate and will be more so in my other future concepts.

Good point but if the choice of a well designed car with a roof like this was around then I reckon it may sway people when trying to decide between a Caterham or a "practical" Elise (or similar).

The problem (IMO) is as much the noise as the look. Even the soft hood keeps much more transmission noise in. So you'd probably have to add sound proofing, and therefore even more weight. And then doors that fit.
Ah, never thought of that. Haven't driven one with the roof on.
Perhaps THE hardcore car should never have praticallity built in.
Plus I bet most people would still drive it without the roof to save weight!
Just realised, is that roof all glass? Thats gonna be pretty heavy. And if its perspex will it not scratch easy?

It's not nice. Especially if it's raining so hard water is getting in over the top of the screen (And around the doors:shiver: )
As an aside IIRC the Atom's chassis is steel, is it not? How much does it weigh? And how much does a 340R (I assume they're ali?) weigh? Am I right in thinking an Elise is about 750-800kg?
There must be weight savings available using an ali space frame.
And another thought, how about putting a sliding perspex dome (flatter than, but similar to a fighter aircraft) on an Atom. With perspex sides on the frame. They must have enough torque with the supercharger that the weight wouldn't be noticeable. That would make one hell of a daily driver.
I don't know that the added complexity of building the atom chassis in ally, for what would likely be a very small saving in weight, is worth the hassle.
look at quality steel-framed push bikes compared to ally - the weights really aren't that different, unless you start to get really smart about the profiling of the tubes, as although ally is lighter, you need more of it to gain the same strength.
there's certainly an argument to use it in terms of stiffness, as steel has a bit more natural 'spring', but trying to assemble a chassis like that out of ally would be quite a feat - and then if you have a small prang and knock some lugs off it ( for instance ), it will again be quite a specialist job to repair it.
