Discussion
I originally posted this in GG as I didn't want to offend Caterham owners by discussing alternatives however you guys must be the experts so here goes.
The original thread is www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=177447&f=23&h=0 sorry for the crosspost.
On another thread I said:
Having been on Ted's excellent Caterham Slalom day yesterday I have got the bug for a 7.
Now I have started looking around there seems to be so many 7 variants, which should I go for?
I will be looking for a weekend car, not a daily drive so practicality won't be such an issue. I will likely only drive in good weather but the car will be parked outside so I am thinking a cover will be a must.
I will have to sell the Porsche which will be a shame but I just can't stop thinking about the rawness of the 7, how everything felt so direct.
So with roughly £9-10000 to spend what should I go for? Caterham / Westfield / Tiger / Robin Hood / Striker, should I look at bike engined cars or K series or crossflow?
Sorry for all the questions but I can't get this image out of my head.

Wait till you drive one that's not set up to handle like st
Caterhams are the most expensive of the bunch, but they are almost always the best put together and the residuals are excellent
For that much cash you should be able to get an old or ex race 1.6k series Cat. Or many varieties of Westy Locost etc
Depends what you want, you'll certainly get a faster Westie

It all depends on what you want to do with the car - track it 90% of the time or cruise country lanes. If the former you'll want a 6 speed box, adjustable platforms, 13 inch wheels. If the latter, 5 speed box, 15 inch wheels would be better.
Recently a good spec but hard used ex racecar (but road reg) came up for £8k with aforementioned gear plus dry sump and a K Series Supersport spec engine.
For your budget you could find a 1997 K Roadsport with 5 speed, an 8 valve live axled 5 speed Vauxhall, a 1700 Supersprint with live axle or de dion and 5 speed. For £11k you could find an HPC spec 2 litre Vauxhall.
You'll not find a BEC Caterham for that money.
I hope this helps
