Hello,

I’m 21 years old and am looking into getting my first CAT, ive got 10k to spend on the CAT and then i'll have enough left over for the insurance (which is really cheap, since ive been a good boy, honest!)

Have you any ideas on what i should be looking for? Such as the ford x flow vs K-series (i can stretch a little).

I thought something like a 1.4 K-series or x flow would be ideal, i have to start somewhere after all! The *only* stipulation is that i need full weather gear and ideally want a LSD. Not bothered too much about gearbox.

It'll mostly be used for road use with the odd track day thrown in for good measure.

I'll be up for buying one from June onwards (have exams to get out of the way first!).

Thanks,

Neil.

p.s. Did a search, but i didn't find any other posts on the issue!

p.p.s. Blatchat requires you to be a member of the lotus 7 club to post, so i couldnt start a topic there

Blimey, when did they start that

Anyway, no advice really as I picked the Caterham accademy, which I'd reccomend if you could stretch to it, top people, top laugh. Wish I'd done it 10 years ago

Good luck

I can reccomend a x-flow, as long as it has already had an unleaded head conversion. They are brilliantly simple and pretty solid engines. Spare parts are also plentiful.

My first seven was a x-flow supersprint which I bought for approx £8K. I used it throughout the winter as my only car and never had a problem with it. It was a very cheap car to run (other than fuel consumption) and it came with all the weather gear. The insurance was much cheaper than I expected also.

You should be able to pick up a similarly priced/spec'ed car, but be prepared to do a little bit of restoration, (such as painting the rear chassis tubes) but then that's half the fun.

Good luck!!

If you join the L7clubGB you will get access on to Blatchat, but you will also get Low Flying mag which contains adverts for sevens which may not appear else where.

I think you'll find that you can still read the posts on Blatchat even if you're not a member.

This subject is well covered try looking here for a starter.

I sold a 1.6K Roadsport last year for £9500, so don't rule out a 1.6K - a better proposition for resale and general use.

There's also an ex race VX for sale at the moment for less than £9k. I can't recall whether it is road registered, but something tells me it is.

Lots of Grads cars on their website for under £10k too - most have the 1.6 VX engine and consequently a live axle, though.

I personally wouldnt buy a 1.4 - you really have to rev the nuts off them and the 5 speed 'box is so unsuited to the characteristics of that engine that you'll soon tire of it. If you must buy one, find one with a 6 speed 'box.

Ok,

Thanks for the link and all the advice.

I'll keep at it -there are loads up for sale at the moment, so I’ll get a good idea of general costs and figures.

It's surprising what you can get for your money, if you look carefully!

Neil,
Like the other Alan said, you can still get onto Blatchat, it's just that as a non-member you cannot post a thread. However, you can 'Blatmail' anybody on there by clicking on the icon at the top of their post. You can also use the Search function and you'll find many threads on this subject in both Chitchat and Tech Topics.
If you're really serious about buying a car, why not join the club (online application form) and go along to a local meeting? You'll find lots of people willing to give you advice and many people in your shoes have found themselves offered rides by members in their area just by posting on the website.
If you have a look in the For Sale section, (as well as on PH) you'll get a good idea of what is on the market and for how much.
Alan.
