Caterham Weight
Discussion
Hi all,
I never understood what is the real weight of a superlight and if this is with full fuel tank or totally dry from liquids
I remember having read 468kg !?
That is low if with full fluids.
Mine none superlight but superlight full spec with all useless parts like heater and the lot off but windscreen on was told to be 510kg with 20lt fuel in it which is a lot in comparison to the 468.

So the 270/310/420 and 620 monicas are a bit fanciful. It's not only the weights that are a bit optimistic/misleading, but the top speeds too. The cars are quicker with an aeroscreen than a full windscreen and, 620 excepted (620S 10mph slower than R) only a single top speed is quoted. So I doubt that most cars will actually achieve the top speeds quoted because most have screens. That's compounded by choice of wheels/tyres and gearbox.
I have to say the 0-60 times seem a bit random too - is the 360 really only 2 tenths (4.8 vs 5.0) quicker to 60 than the 270 - and does the LSD of the 420 really allow it to be a whole second faster than the 360?

2006 Freestyle S3 spec'd with lightest components and Cossie 2.3 l weighed in at 1186 lbs (538 kg) with tank approximately 7/8 full - topped off tank about 20 miles away prior to dyno session where car was weighed. Lots of little things can add up (or subtract down) to significant amounts.

Caterham used to specify the added weight of all of the extras - heater, screen, even paint - which, for an ultra-lightweight car seemed a sensible approach. It's a pity we don't now know how much the 6 speed box is heavier/lighter, which are the lightest wheel/tyre combinations etc etc. It might just give pause for thought if we are buying a car because it is ultra light - and find that the "luxury items" we are speccing make the car 10% + heavier.
