This looks fantastic, the price is a problem! An R500 manual is the ultimate car to me. I would love to get the money up for this some how.

What is this R500 really worth privately?
Please no 'whatever someone is prepared to pay for it'. The reason I ask is that if I was to buy this I may not be able to afford to keep it long term so I would have to sell on.

Why not, they are so cheap to run, insurance is good, they are cheap on fuel and you can service it yourself.
You only live twice.

Because I live in Ireland a Caterham will never sell here for anything like what it's worth in England and I don't like taking a pounding on the resale. That car is probably worth just over £30,000 here. I would have to take it back to Caterham and sell it to them trade. I would like to know what Caterham would value it at...........£32,000?

I had an R400d a while back and I couldn't sell it privately, a dealer sold it to someone in Denmark for me, I have yet to see another one as cheap, no one would get on a plane from England, flights are £39!!!!

Great colour for an R500 too!

Just one quick question, is it a genuine R500? I only ask as it does not have the limited number plaque on the dash?

Also why does the advert say it has 5 gears, or is it just Oakmere clicking the wrong box on the advert?

Hi Mike,

Privately I would expect you to be able to get up to £32,000 for it in England, if you took it to a trader to buy from you I would probably expect around £30,000. In Ireland, its tough to say. As you rightly point out people dont like to make the journey, I think mostly for the cost and time involved in bringing it back.

I would ask what it is that draws you to the Duratec over some of the other great Caterham engines which produce the same power to weight ratio? I would love to help you find a car if I can. If you did decide to buy this car and needed an easy sale at a later point, we would always be prepared to offer our assistance.

All our best,

Callum

This is an official dealer car, and it's £37k with very low miles and a manual box. That's one of the cheapest seen at a main dealer for an R500 (assuming it's genuine - get the chassis number and call Caterham to double check). By comparison, there is a Private seller asking £34k for a car with 24k miles… Guess which car is the better deal?!

As for resale back to a dealer - £30 - £32k seems realistic as long as the car needs minimal prep for sale.

O/T: Not sure what the fascination is with dash plaques? I have a genuine SLR which doesn't have a dash plaque...

My 'Dash Plaque' on my Superlight was on the scuttle in the engine bay...

I was only pointing out that it was not present, which often means it's a car that's been built to R500 spec, but was not s genuine factory R500.

As subrig pointed out, easy enough to check with Caterham from the chassis number to find out its plaque number, even if it is not on the car.

Just for information, I also live in Ireland and bought my Caterham in the south of England. It only cost me £300 to have the car picked up from the seller and delivered to my door.
