This may sound like a daft Q, but what is the correct way to check the oil levels on my R500k? I've been letting it get up to full operating temp, shutting engine off and checking level after 5 mins, however I believe there is an argument to check with the engine idling?

This all stemmed from my previous post about losing oil pressure after pushing hard on the track yesterday - checking the oil level the above way it was at the top of the dipstick full mark 5 mins after shutting off the engine.

Thanks in advance!

Advice from the original engine builder - Minister

Q1 How should I set the oil level in my dry sump oil tank?
A The procedure to adopt is to warm the engine up to approximately 70°c water, then turn engine off, remove the oil filler cap, and with a clean steel rule measure from the bottom of the tank (avoiding any misleading castings!) a minimum of 9.5" (24cms) of oil is required. Replace oil filler cap. The advice is to slightly fill above this level and allow the engine to find its own level by throwing some of the excess oil into the catch tank. Close monitoring of this excess oil being thrown out, will gradually indicate the oil level the system will hold. Ideally, the catch tank will have ½" to ¾" (1 to 2cms) of oil in the catch tank after a half hour test session. Check oil level at least every half-hour track use.

I made a measuring rod from a length of welding rod and filed a notch in it.

Perfect thank you. I have about 1cm of oil in the catch tank so think about right.

I would still measure from the bottom of the DS tank just for peace of mind even though there appears to be the right amount in the catch tank.
