After owning 5 Caterham's in as many years (love them - thoroughly rewarding: easy to maintain and run), I would now love try a 911. I'm looking at everything and anything in the way of air-cooled 911's but in order of preference prefer C2's: 993, 964, 911SC and I'm looking for somewhere that will p/x my Superlight and/or Elise for similarly cherished 911.

The challenge is finding somewhere good quality low mileage car (like my 7 and Elise) that deal in other marques such as Lotus and Caterham.

Any tips/advice on procuring a good 911 from drivers that have ventured into Porsching via the 7 route? (try not to make answers too rude - I am a 7er after-all, and before anyone comments: yes I have asked a similar question in the Porsche forum)

I went from owning a series of 911s to owning a series of Caterhams and I bought a 3.2 Cab in May to keep my Caterham company.

Ah yes - Mr P I presume. I know that even if I get a 964RS for a year, eventually I'll get a good value SC or targa and a basic 7 again in the future, nice to have a change though as I need a new project 7's too perfect (I only had to fit Tillet seats and R400 wheels this year, and need a new project for the winter)

I sold my 1.6KSS daily driver upon the arrival of son #1. I needed a sensible family motor, so purchased a 964C4. And a roof box.

The 911 was great, and met all of its expectations. I also never had the Caterham up to an indicated 165mph..

However, the itch was still there and two years later I started building another Caterham. They get to you like that.

Bruce, mail him thru his profile on PH...if no joy, mail me through here and I'll let you know who he is (and I do believe the car is still in his possession)

I do still have my 7 (and elise) at present, I had a couple of near takers for the 7, but at the end of the day I appreciate 16.5k is a lot cash for a private sale (even if the same car would sell at a dealers in excess of £18k), so no sale materialised yet. since advertising I have treated the car to the latest Caterham aero filler cap, new alloy race radiator and a silicon hose set, plus is being taxed for another 6 months end feb and having cam-belt changed next week for piece of mind. Elise is much the same condition Lotus history, but up for grabs around £12,995. .. and correct both cars were supplied by Paul Stephens this time last year - its just he's not had a silver 993 C2S or suitably priced/history 964 C2 in stock yet - which are the only 911's I'll consider (yes I know, fussy).

I went from a supersprint 2 years (and a scooby) to a SuperlightR 2 years (and a scooby) to a 996 Targa only and now a 996 Turbo.

I wasnt geting the miles in for the 7 and hence wanted something fast but useable every day. No regrets at all about change in.

did 12000 miles a year in the supersprint, then about 6000 in the SLR down to 2000 in the last year of ownership.

I think the best option would have been a GT3 over a targa but enjoyed it nonetheless but love the Turbo. As good as the SLR but all weathers.

having just finished building my new caterham (second 7) I'm already thinking, great fun building but still more of the same. ie great on track or blats with mates for the few days that they actually happen in a summer. Pain in the butt the rest of the time. I find myself thinking 911

But with a budget of £20K whats gonna be the best option? 964's seem a bit long in the tooth although a good read up about them all over the net (especially porsche964.co.uk) has allayed most of my fears about them. It seems 993 and 996 prices seem to have merged at the lower end.

A bloke at work recently bought an early 996 from auction for not much over £20K. To me that sounds like a good bet but I hear there have been reliability problems with 996's.

Just seems £20K is no mans land in porkerland

£20k buys you an lhd 993, an early 3.4 996 with leaking RMS, a late 964 in pristine condition, a late 3.2 Carrera in concours condition, a 1972 2.4S in mint condition...so not exactly "no man's land" but you aren't going to find an rhd varioram 993 or rhd facelift 996 for that kind of money.
