Has any one tried a carbon propshaft?
Discussion
Yes, had a CTG one on my CSR race car, 1st one snapped after 4hrs taking out most of the tunnel and very nearly my leg, CTG replaced and that was unbalanced, had to fight tooth and nail to get them to re-balance it and they only just accepted that is was "slightly" (read massively) out.......IMO it's really not worth it, you can get normal props lightened
Crikey! And there was I, mind made up to get one! I was lead to believe they where good to 1000hp.
Better speak to Force Racing about a Titanium one then.

Oh yes! I was standing next to a 50 meter carbon mast last week.
With carbon standing rigging.
There are also carbon sails.
Kevlar is ysed a lot in hulls/sails too, due to it's high resistence to abrasion amongst other qualities.
But the Sun buggers it in no time. It needs lots of UV protection. The rigging for instance is covered in a sheaving, whish seems to be poliester, similar to that used on braided lines.
It seems to have a short life.

Nothing wrong with carbon as long as its used for the correct applications! A lot of people seem to think it can replace metals for everything, simply not the case. Plenty of CF propshafts kicking around without any issues, sorry to hear about your bad experiences!! Sun shouldn't be an issue as long as it has the correct surface finish.

In my sail boat racing days, carbon was the in thing, especially with spinaker poles and masts. Most of the new sail boat super yachts have carbon masts, but painted to protect from the light. Carbon in masts has reduced the weight, lowered the centre of gravity, increased stability, reduced rolling motion, resulting in faster boats and / or more comfortable. Now on motor yachts, I must say I don't see any carbon, however there is some million dollar tenders which have splashes of carbon in them.
The subject has drifted off track a little.... I will stick with my metal prop and leave the carbon for the bling, bling parts for now.
Hey Mick do you hang out much on the boat, train & planes forum? Sometimes view it to see what they are saying about the big floating white elephants.

Your a busy craftsmen Mick! How the hell do you find the time? I use to sail a SJ35 IOR 3/4 tonner racer with a bunch of friends in joint ownership at a competitive level in the late 80's early 90's. Three Fastnet races and many Cowes, Ramsgate and Cork Weeks, plus 100's of cross channel races and plenty of maintenance in the winter. Basically learnt my current trade having fun on sail yachts in the British Waters. Will monitor channel boats, planes & trains and keep duel watch on this channel
I split my time..
I had a great day on the water on Thursday, jumping in to make up the crew numbers for the Conde de Barcelona classic yacht regatta, which happened to be moved to my home town of Alcudia this year.
I was top Gib man, and Mainsheet for gybes on the 1904 gaff cutter "Kelpe".
Not a winch in sight. I have the blisters to prove it! But what a Darling of a boat! I even got quite a bit of time in on the helm, which has re-charged my soul for the next six months.
I started sailing in 1994, jumping on a 46ft ketch in the Galapagos Islands as a none sailor, and doing the 3,250nm to the Marquisas! I kept going all the way back to Gibraltar, and haven't stoped boating since.
How's that for throwing a thread off on a tangent!
