Cycle wings V Clamshells
Discussion
to be honest - I don't think they make the car that much slower, but I can tell you that clamshells make the car far more pointy at speed - the steering feels superdirect and it takes a lot of getting used to. This must be down to the volume of air that gets traped under them.
I personally don't like them because of that....oh alright then, the real reason I don't like them is 'cos I can't watch the suspension going up and down as I'm driving along

Unless you're in a 200 bhp plus Seven, I don't think the style of front mudguard makes much difference. The aerodynamics of a Seven are pretty apalling no matter what covers the front wheels.
Flares are virtually unobtainable from Caterham now on new cars in any case - they've completely fallen out of fashion. I'm sure it's because all the current Caterham racing series use cycle mudguards.
