After the sad demise of my BMW M5 I've found myself with a 3.5ltr 286bhp M88 engine with a 5speed Getrag 'box attached. I'm wondering if it's possible to get them into a Caterham 7. Has anyone done this or knows of it being done?

Don't do it. Totally unsuitable engine, and you'll end up with a really badly handling Seven! Not for long though....

nuts

Even if you could make it fit (and keep it cool etc etc) the above consensus still holds.

It isn't the power, it is just a big lump and that isn't going to be easy to manage.

Sell it and turbocharge a 'Busa smile

Duncan Cowpers Dax Rush, with a Turbo Busa engine built by Geoff Page, with an inconel 80's F1 turbo.
Now that's a suitable engine for a caterham!

Absobloodylutely! smile
As an aside, I had a nice chat with Geoff Page a couple of weeks ago, over here in Mallorca.
He was supporting an RS200 which was running in the Mallorca Rally Clasico.
What a nice bloke. He tells me he's building an in-line Busa engine which uses an inline box, similar the the Hartley H2.
Perfect for a sevenesque car, exept I prefer a N/A engine. He tried talking me out of the H1 for my project.(I think smile )
He also asked me if I was mad. biggrin

I was being a little flippant!! wink

IMO a turbo on a busa is overkill for the road. My Rush has an NA busa and is more then quick enough for road use.

In real life I've seen one with a Lexus V8 on a Supra gearbox and not forgetting the Westfield Seight. It's doable and the if I recall the BMW V8 is a 60' vee so it's more compact than the Rover lump in the Westfield. Sounds like it could be a lot of fun and more suitable for daily use than the all or nothing bike engine Se7ens.
