Dear All,

I need to repaint the rollbar on my '93 HPC. It's the standard fitment roll over hoop.

It looks very easy to remove but I just want to make a quick check on a couple of things:

I'm assuming the car won't fold inwards if I remove it i.e. it's not a stressed member is it?

Also the fixing bolts securing it to the chassis at the top of the rear suspension turrets, are they screwed into captive nuts or do you need access from below too?

Thanks for any advise you're able to give.

Cheers,

Simon

Just a case of removing two bolts in the main part of rollbar and two nuts and bolts on the two brace struts, these are a tight fit and may need a bit of persuading.

Don't know if it makes a difference, but my Caged chassis has bolts under the main verticals, which can only be accessed by shock absorber removal.

I have the arch chassis and there are no bolts underneath, so could be a differance between the two types of chassis.

I have an arch also and do have the bolts underneath. I understand that some are left out as they can be tricky. The bolt heads are not very thick and it is wise to grind and old socket down a bit to ensure a good fit and avoid rounding off. Lots of copper grease when refitting.
These bolts provide stuctural integrity.

The bolts in the shock absorber turrets are only on the track day roll bars (with diagonals) A standard roll bar has the bolts on top.

Yes mine was a caged track day bar (cage now).
Thanks mickrick.

Simon,
I removed my original bar from a 1991 S3 only last week, and mine was secured only by the visible bolts you can see through the flanges on top. The bar had never had any other mountings, unlike the replacement FIA bar I have fitted which does bolt in place using additional hidden bolts that come up from inside the rear suspension turret. Removal was really easy on my 20 year old car.
