Whats the road legal trackday tyre of choice these days?
Discussion
Hi all,
I've been out of the loop for a while in terms of trackday rubber, but am looking for some new tyres for my caterham, I want the most amount of grip possible, but still road legal.
Last time I did any trackdays, ACB10's were king for this sort of thing, whats the situation now? Is it still ACB10's, or are the newer CR500's or ZZR's the tyre to go for these days? or how do the yoko 48r's stack up?
Looking at 13inch diameter , 6 inch wide rims if it makes any difference.

The ZZR tyres are good and are worth about 1-2 seconds a lap on my local circuit over the CR500. Once you've tried them it is difficult to go back to a lesser tyre. That said, I think they are maybe a little too extreme and marginal in the wet to be a reliable road tyre. But they would get you to (and back ) from the track legally - which, I suppose, is what they were designed to do.
From a good deal of googling, it would appear that the ACB10's are still king in terms of outright speed, but have significant drawbacks in terms of tramlining and poor performance in standing water.
There are now other tyres (zzr,cr500) which whilst they cant match the outright pace of the the acb10's , they are a better all rounder.
I think I'll stick to ACB10's, seeing as my car currently has the geometry set for these anyway, seems less hassle all round. I can put up with the tramlining.

Re getting hold of ACB10's, BMTR seem to sell them, there doesnt appear to be an issue with supply

ZZR is what you need. No question. I have used CR500s and ACB10s on my R400 Duratec (220). The car spends it's time driving to/from the track and doesn't do much road mileage - although I have driven it to Spa and the Ring on ZZRs in all weather conditions and it's fine. There are no issues with ZZR performance on wet roads at legal speeds. I also have the race suspension - this helps get the best out of the tyres. There is no way I would ever go back to CR500s...
