Now I have a Caterham and am biased through years of car magazines colouring my judgement... but this Westfield would show an R500 the way home I feel biggrin

Seeing as this is Pistonheads I thought I'd compare apples with oranges and try and upset the applecart with a stupid comparison.

I'm no so sure a R500 would struggle to keep up with that poorly set-up Westie. I don't think I'd want to be on a track with him argue

I'm very sure an r500 would be destroyed by that westie. It does look set up cack tho - i'm half way through his build thresd (great read), don't see any chassis based fettle as of yet...

Oh, and to back the above up, at Snetterton our Roadsport (k series VHPD engine, 5 speed box) happily matched both DR500's there on the day in terms of raw pace - I still don't think all 263 horses manage to get from the brochure to the collection bay...

Very, very fast on the back straight but I wish the clip had the same sound quality as this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIIn5J5UQPo

was hitting 160mph on the back straight running on low boost, I think you will fine the car is quite capable of going round corners fast, the guy was just having a bit of fun on the last session of the day smile

Build thread wink

http://passionford.com/forum/restorations-rebuilds...

I don't know if it would or wouldn't beat an R500. Though I can't say it's poorly setup as I've not seen the car or an attempt at driving it asthough qualifying for pole in F1.

Looks to me like he knows he is faster than the rest of the track goers so time wasted having fun in the corners is no problem.

^ everyone is after a different version of fun from a track day.. I've been fortunate enough to drive caterhams from "normal" superlight spec, through R300, Roadsport R, R500, DR500. Personally, I'd prefer a well set Superlight with 120 horse over a bad R500. Other people would prefer a mental straight line speed, and sod the corners.
To me, the idea of a 700 bhp/tonne car is intreaguing, I once scared myself silly in a straight line in a GT2 and it was muchos fun. A vastly rapid 7 would be great as a 1 off, but the fun I normall perceive from a 7 is from the balance, cornering speed etc.
There is another thread somewhere with typical PH arguements, some accusing the driver of various things, about 10% of which are fair. IMO that car looks like it handles like a turd, once the owner sorts the handling the next vid should be good fun.

Its my car... I'm a MASSIVE HUGE SPASTIC Caterham fan. Love them!

I always tell people to buy them over Westfields... check any of my posts even on the Westfield board,

But to the people that say my car is not well set up or has no attention to handling or chassis prep. They are wrong. very wrong.

I am enjoying the car and driving like a tool on purpose. Turning in too aggressively... smashing the throttle and waiting for the boost to come on and try and hang on!

why? coz it was fun!

I'm not a great driver at all... I drive for fun. But put a good driver in my car on any circuit and the same driver in a R500 and the Westy will win.

Evo magazine timed an R500 around the West circuit a Bedford in 1.20

I did a Howfast day around the same circuit few weeks back and did..... 1.20.

I can assure you the EVO magazine driver is better than me and had more than 1 LAP ATTEMPT at a time...

So please dont slag my little Westy on the basis on my crap and intentionally 'fun' driving, In the right hands its a VERY capable and fast car. and it DOES handle.... but it also makes BIG power and double the Torque of an R500... so if you drive it like a holligan, It will go sideways anywhere

Although yes I 100000% agree an R500 is the BETTER car and a proper atmo engine is the BETTER way for a car of this type. I'm just lucky to have a few different toys and wanted a mad mad turbo scary nutter mobile so had this thing built for me.

If I was only allowed one toy. It would without doubt be a Caterham CSR (more usable than an R500... screen roof etc ) AMAZING cars. Just the best for me.

I'm not a total dick all the time (I left the car in the pits from 9am-3pm that day and used my Exige and clio until then as I know its a bit of an animal and the closing speeds even if you are not trying are silly) but it was the last hour at an empty Bedford.... and I was just having a hoon and learning about a FUN FUN car and taking out 6 or 7 people, (some that I didnt know) for a little exciting ride!

So apologies for going on... but please dont judge all Westy owners or Turbo 7 owners just on basis of that Video.

That was HALF boost by the way smile and I have had hardly any time driving it....

You would 100% be able to get that car around that track VERY fast. I've seen your vids... you can PEDAL! Welcome for a drive of it mate!

Westys get a bad name with Caterham owners and I think I have just made the situation worse frown

Not my intention frown

Sorry chaps. Was just meant to be a bit of fun. I really wasn't trying to go fast and I know you cant hear it. But I was lifting off in few places for the noise meters.

At full chat the acceleration is MUCH harder

I think your car looks hilariously mental! biglaughbiglaughbiglaugh

What is the max boost/BHP it runs? What was the approx bhp in the video clip? I'm guessing the turbo is laggy with an on/off power delivery?

Saw the video in Track Days, just mental (but probably enough to get you thrown off some more po-faced trackdays) fun all the way biggrin

Ignoring the obvious (you can buy an R500 from new!) this is more of a Levante rival isn't it with that power ?
