My 2008 R400 has a 3.92 final drive ratio, great on track but 62mph is 3742 revs.

I like to do track days but also drive on the road and was wondering if the 3.62 standard diff makes much of a difference in the drivability/acceleration stakes.

Has anybody tried both?

Was also wondering about a change to a 3.38 crown and pinion. Would that ruin the car?

Stick with the 3.92 and wear earplugs :-)
I changed from a 3.62 to 3.92 for Sprint/Hillclimb purposes and it wasn't much worse on the road than the 3.62 in terms of noise/revs. The difference is a few hundred rpm. Th 3.92 is better on acceleration.

I have a 3.92 diff. I think it works well with the overdrive 5-speed gearbox, but I can imagine how it might get noisy with the 6-speed.

I remember getting a phone call from Caterham after I had ordered the car. I was asked if the car was for track or road use. I said mostly Track and occasional road, so they obviously fitted the 3.92.

That's fine, I got what I wished for, a track oriented r400. Acceleration is great on track, so I think I'll learn to live with the manic nature on road. Won't be touring France with it though.

No problem touring with a 3.92 and 6 speed box. Get a good intercom system or wear earplugs and its fine!

My sigma 125 has the 3.62 as standard and pulls surprisingly well in 4th (same as your 6th).

I think your R400 wouldn't have any trouble pulling the higher gear, and might save some noise/petrol smile

I have done, in a 1600 Supersport with 6-speed and a 3.92 diff. No worries, and as econmical as my mate's 5-speed 170bhp car on the same trip.
As yours seems slightly lower-geared than mine though, I'm guessing you're on 13" wheels.

Ta for the replies.

I suppose I could always put on a set of 15'' wheels with 205X50-15 on the back for touring.

Or, as you suggest just get ear plugs smile

I got my R400 for track use with occasional road use in mind. Started life with a 3.92, but just found it too rev hungry on road and top speed limiting on fast tracks (e.g. Spa). I now have a 3.62 fitted and I think it's the perfect compromise given that the R400 has so much power, there is no issue for the track dayer. If I were a racer, I'd want a 3.92 available, but I'm not, so I don't!

Did you change just Crown wheel and pinion or entire diff?

Caterham did the work for me. Started by changing crown wheel and pinion, but as the resulting diff was ear bleedingly loud, they ended up changing the entire diff unit as the car was basically new and under warranty.

sorry for the thread hi jack.. but when I had my csr260 I found the gearing quite tall (6 speed caterham box) which was great for road use from memory it did just under 60 in 1st then 20mph extra in each gear with it being a torquey 2.3 the gearing felt really good and it didnt seem to suffer at all .

Im now looking at getting an r400(never driven one yet) from what Ive read on this thread the gearing seems quite low in comparison .

my question is Do the 2 cars run the same 6speed box and different final drive to alter the speeds? Im trying to recall what diff ratio my Csr had in , I had it rebuilt after it sheered the casing before i fitted the uprated diff stays, but cant remember if it was a 3.3 or a 3.6 im guessing if its the same box it must have been a 3.3.

I seem to recall 3,000rpm was 60mph.

Sounds like you had 3.38 ish diff in the CSR, with 15'' wheels?

Standard in R400 is 3.62, 60mph is about 3500 revs.

Mine is 3.92, 60mph is about 3750 revs.
