On the advice of some of you on here I've bought a set Avon ZZR tyres. Do they like the same setup as the CR500s i.e. pressures and camber, or do I need to do some tweeking?

I think camber probably veers into personal preference but I don't find too much difference between the two. 21 (hot) seems about right for pressures

I found you need lots more camber on them plus some toe out. Pressures for me are about 1 psi higher than cr500s.

Thanks guys, I'll give them a go and see what temperatures I get across the tyre with my setup.

Do these come in different compounds?

A good question! When they were introduced they where marketed as being available in two compounds (A60 and A24). The ones I've purchased seem to be neither of these compounds but something in between. To be honest my knowledge of tyres and their marking is not good enough to be sure. I'd like to know more.

Hi, I have another question.
Where's the best place to buy them? I don't need fitting, but I would need them sending to Mallorca.
I'm surprised You didn't ask whoever you bought them from, about compunds.

I'm sure if you google them you'll find suppliers. I bought mine from Caterham and assumed they would be the suitable for track use on a Caterham. As I understand it, the softer is really a sprint/hillclimb tyre, but you are right - I should have asked!

Caterham sell the A60 compound, the A24 compound is made in small batches and generally sold though places like BMTR, they tend to sell out quickly though due to the small batches made.

So which is the better one for a Caterham?
I would presume the A60 being as it's sold by Caterham. But Avon list it a s a Saloon car tyre.
The A24 is listed as a single seater/sidecar tyre, which I would have thought was more like a Caterham.
They're both medium compound. confused

I think Avon's compound descriptions need to be read carefully. Quoting in full, A60 is a 'Medium compound for saloon car circuit slick applications'. The important word is 'slick' and I suspect it behaves differently on a road legal tyre with a tread pattern.

For a road/track car stick with the A60, they are still very soft compared to a normal tyre, the A24 will overheat on a road/track car and wear very quickly.

O.K. thanks for the advice. It gets very hot here at this time of year too.
I don't know what the road temps would be, but ambient temps are getting over 30 right now.

Cheers,
Mick. smile

I use the A24 compound on a sprint car R400 and doubt that they would last 100 miles on a sunny day on the road.
But fantastic for a 2.5 mile sprint
