Evening chaps,

Any tips on good insurers? I seem to remember you used to be able to get insurance pretty cheap on 7s, but no doubt that has changed.

Hi,

I did this research a few weeks ago and posted the following in blatchat. The quotes are for a 220 bhp R400, 3000 mile limit, self and wife to drive, clean licence, low risk area. Went with Footman James who are often recommended:

Adrian Flux quoted £291.34 with Chaucer. Sounded good but car must be fitted with a working tracker as it's value exceeds £35k so add £303 for a tracker retrieve with subscription. Doesn't sound so good now.
Frank Pickles Unable to quote as value exceeds £30k
Glynwoodas above
MSM £491 with a £450 theft/damage excess and £75 windscreen excess but also requires a cat 1 alarm fitted or working tracker
Caterham insurance tried about 6 times to phone over two days. They never answer so gave up. Don't know how they get any business.
Buckingham insurance Unable to quote due to the value of the car. Had to explain what a Caterham was.
Competition car insurance £424 with a £500 excess and this inc 10% discount for L7 club members. Also inc 5 track days per year (1 of which can be european but not N/ring)
REIS Sadly they quoted over £600. Sadly because they clearly understood the car and I would have felt comfortable being insured with them based on all the recommendations they get on here. For me though, too expensive.
Footman James£385 with a £250 excess for theft/damage and u/l windscreen cover with £50 excess. Best quote and from a recommended company which I'm very likely to take them up on but worth mentioning: theirs is a flat rate policy which means no no claims bonus for anyone who might want to sell their 7 and get insured on something else afterwards and no 3rd party cover to drive other cars with this insurance.
The bulk of ins co's (except FJ as above) work on a no claims bonus basis and offer 4 years intro discount on proof of existing max ncb which might be better for some people. The requirement to have a tracker fitted by some ins companys when the 7 has a Thatcham cat 2 immobiliser already is excessive IMHO and puts me off using flux or MSM. Might look again though when the value comes in under the £35k tracker limit.

If your car is not over £30k and you don't do track days it is well worth giving Frank Pickles a call. This broker is getting popular with us lot.

Put it this way, my Adrian Flux renewal was £211 and Frank Pickles was £117. Policy is underwritten by LV (Liverpool Victoria) so should be pretty safe, hough I can't vouch for Claims service, thankfully!!

Cheers
