Does the Caterham sequential box do flat upshifts yet?

Or do you still have to lift?

Thinking of getting one for the 7. Then thinking about taking it racing.

Don't think I could complete a race without fluffing a few changes with the h-pattern and with a K-series engine that could mean a rebuild!

I'd rather not splash out now if there's a flat shift version on the way.

Isn't flat shifting an ecu related function, not a gearbox function? That's assuming the box can do clutchless changes.

The ecu (in the main engine one or piggy back one), just times an engine cut and the solenoid shove to achieve the change.

Is this a geartronics question?

The Quaife sequential used by caterham is fine for racing, if a little noisy for purely road work. Without any messing with the ECU, you can do clutchless up-shifts by easing back on the throttle slightly which is quicker than using the clutch. Down-shifts can be done without the clutch but you need to let the revs drop alot first or you run the risk of momentarily locking the rear wheels which ain't good. In reality there is less need for this anyway and proper heel'n'toe downshifts with clutch are the way to go unless you want to spend alot of dosh on a flappy paddle system linked to the g'box and ecu.

Much of the benefit of the sequential is the confidence you get from knowing you can't muck up a gear change. Twice in races with an H pattern box, I've hurtled into paddock hill bend at brands, attempted to drop from 6th to 4th but found 2nd instead and ended up in the gravel. No such problems with the quaife which means greater confidence to brake later and really chuck the car into the corner knowing that I can't really screw up the two downshifts.

yep, hence the question about whether the OP is looking at clutchless changes of flat-shifting. If the latter, then Geartronics are the people you need.

My thoughts exactly.

Is there a way of getting paddle shift?!

Heck when it comes to racing I need every advantage I can get!

The Sadev unit is probably the way to go, it is lighter, has all the right bits to plumb the geartronics in if thats the way you want to go and doesn't require a bit of a botch mod the the shifter if you want to flat shift.

Both will work out at similar money if you are flat shifting - not much change form £7k i suspect.

The new geartronics software in the GCU uses the gear indicator switch to trigger the flat shift, no need for load cells etc. Recently fitted 60G box with this flatshift system to R400 race car, works well so far!

Peter, sounds good.

Didn't know they had done this and was the reason i was considering the sadev, despite the 60 being "more proven" in C400's.

If you don't mind, what did it all end up costing you?

Cheers

Who do you recommend I talk to regarding supply and fitment of the necessary parts?

Top bloke smile

Retrofitted the Suzuki TRE into my Gear Display very happily when I was asking about buying the "new" one instead.

When I find £3000 down the back of the sofa, his will be my paddleshift of choice.

What series/championship do you intend racing in ?

I would be seriously tempted to race for a year in a lower spec car. You'll probably get a whole seasons racing for the price of these spec gearboxes
