They're already stupidly cheap to insure! I was talking to a guy one the Caterham stand at the motorshow a few years ago, and he reckoned it was cheaper for him to get insured on a 1.6 Caterham at 19 than it was for his friend to get insured on a Golf GTi at 20. And it is, much cheaper. I'm 19 and got a quote for £1000 on one with around 150 bhp, and that's fully comp. Cheaper than insurance on a 2CV 3rd party!

Not for me!

"Your quote is £4009.95 per annum"

From Tesco.

24 years old, Off road parking in Edgbaston. 1 year NCD (no claims previous)

For a Caterham 7 1.4 sport valued at £10k

Ouch!

The ability for younger motorists to own and enjoy the
unique Caterham Seven sportscar experience has been
made easier thanks to the arrival of a new model.
‘Caterham Seven Sprint’ neatly rolls FREE insurance and
compulsory driver training, plus a competit ive finance term
into one easy monthly payment plan, allowing drivers aged
21 and over, the chance to revel in the performance and
handling prowess of the record breaking British two-seater.
Drawing its power from the free revving 1.4-litre K Series,
the 105bhp and 107lb ft of torque on tap is enough to sling
the lightweight sports number to 60mph in a shade over
6.5secs and onto a top speed of 110mph.
With the flagship Superlight R500 Evolution punching a
blistering 530bhp per tonne, driver training is always
recommended before anyone buys into the Caterham
lifestyle. Although an option for most, it is a requirement of
‘Sprint Seven’ ownership. Before taking delivery, drivers
will have to undertake an intensive one-day course on how
to safely handle, harness and above all enjoy the
distinctive Caterham motoring sensation. Weighing in at
just 540kg, the Seven Sprint offers de Dion rear
suspension, 5-speed syncromesh gearbox, 15-inch alloys,
carbon-fibre dashboard and front wings, and finished in a
metallic paint.
Economically, with it’s proven reliability, bullet-proof
residuals, low running costs and now free insurance, the
Seven Sprint is a no-brainer.
The Caterham Seven Sprint is available from under £300
per month subject to status.

How much is it going to cost, I can't find a price anywhere except the £300 a month finance?

Talk to Egger Lawson (0115 941 5255) - they do a specialist scheme. My tin top (scooby turbo) uses my 5 yrs no claims and costs £700ish. The caterham costs £400

That's why I didn't publish the article originally. There has to be a heft deposit/baloon payment somewhere...

Getting a quote on a Caterham from someone like Tesco is a bit pointless. You need to go to a specialist insurer like Egger Lawson (also know as compeition car insurance). MSM are also good for young uns (so I have heard) if you don't go for the £300 per month Caterham.

There always is a catch to those finance deals, back to the Elise saving up fund I think.

I'm 24 years old and have just sold my R300 (160bhp) and got a quote for an R400 (200bhp) as a replacement. Price? Less than £500 fully comp 10k per annum. Find another (factory built) car that'll do 0-6-mph in 3.9 secs with ins that cheap!!!

There is a ballon Ted but it isn't that unreasonable so I'm led to believe. A mate in the finance industry bought one on this basis and he used to sell Finance to main dealers so is no mug.

As regards insurance - the usual suspects insure these cars eg Flux plus some good specialists such as Dave Spragg at MSM.

Generally they're a lot cheaper to insure than Elises.

Beware the Elise as regards insurance.

My R400 costs me just over £300, my Elise cost over £1000 and some wanted £1600 and that was at 32 years old, 3000 miles per year and 4 years NCD.

There is no point in getting a quote for a Caterham from any of the mainstream people, go the Club scheme route with THB Eggar Lawson or another specialist.

Another for MSM. I am slightly (cough) over 25, but it still costs me nearly £90 less p.a. to insure my Caterham, than it does for my Fiat Bravo.

Yup, it does, my quote was actually for a Westfield, but I guess there won't be much difference...and you'll save around £100 if you spend £25 joining the Westfield Sports Car club. Got it down to £999 with MSM, slightly more with Footman James.

Caterhams are very cheap to insure if you limit the mileage. Mine has a 3000 limit and is £300 a year cheaper than my tin-top (a diesel saloon)Osbournes are another insurer to Consider as well as the others mentioned

Picked up a sheet from their motorshow stand giving the details of the offer, and they had an example on display.

Caterham Cars said:
Caterham Seven Sprint:

- 1.4l 16v engine
- Metallic paint finish
- 15" 8 spoke Anthracite wheels with bespoke Avon CR500 tyres
- Full weather equipment and screen
- Leather seats
- Momo sports steering wheel
- Heater
- Black pack
- Superlight suspension
- Carbon front cycle wings
- Carbon dash

First year insurance - subject to successful completion of Caterham driver training, driver history, postcode and storage conditions. Applicant must be 21 years old or over.

Driver training - Driver training will be with Cadence Driver Development, in your own vehicle. The final part of the day will be driving a Caterham Seven.

Package Price: £299.40 per month

Finance example:

- Car purchase price £19,950.00
- Initial deposit £2,750.00
- Amount of credit £17,200.00
- Charges £3,553.40
- Acceptance fee £99.00
- Option fee £99.00
- Total charges £3,751.40
- Total balance £20,951.40

- 1st month payment £398.40
- 35 months payment £299.40
- 1 final payment of £9,975.00

Typical APR 9.2%

It isn't clear whether this is for a fully-built Caterham or the kit. Seems a slightly odd spec with the R3/4/500 wheels, lots of carbon bits, SL suspension but only a 1.4 - the Caterham equivalent of a maxed Corsa? Did look very nice on the stand, can't help thinking as a "first caterham" there's no need for all the extras, seems a decent deal though if that's for a factory-built price.

Taking normal list prices, a built Classic will set you back £15450. Add on:

Metallic paint - 1100
15" alloys/tyres - 650
Windscreen / weather equipment - 855
Leather seats - 250
Momo wheel - 250
Heater - 250
Black pack - 280
Carbon dash - 295
Superlight suspension - 675

You're at £20055, and then there's the carbon front wheels and arch protectors (there's a carbon pack on the options list at 1250, although I think that has more) plus the driver training and first year's insurance.

OK, it's a brand new Caterham, but why not save a packet and buy a second-hand car? I'm 21 and I know that I couldn't afford that finance deal. Another thing to consider is that most specialist kit car insurers that I have seen (in kitcar, which kit? etc) will not insure anyone under 25, with a couple dropping to under 23's. So even if you did get one years free insurance you would probably end up paying through the teeth the year after!
