Gearbox swap

I have an 87 1700 xflow, live axle with what I presume is the Ital diff. I want to replace the gearbox with a type 9 5-speed gearbox which hopefully will give some fuel saving on long runs.
Can anyone tell me what is involved in this. I have read somewhere that the prop shaft will have to be shortened and the splines changed?
