Just wondering how they compare with CR500's in the dry. I know they're not as good in the wet.

Thinking of trying them, unless anyone knows where to source 245/50 x 13 CR500's confused

Cheers,
Mick.smile

Our ZZRs will be going back on for the Brands Hatch GP day on wednesday. They're noticably better for dry track grip than the CR500 which is hardly a dog!

I have just done my first track day with ZZRs having made the switch from CR500s. My car is a DR400. First impressions are very good. Definitely more grippy than CR500s. Take longer to get up to temperature, but boy do they grip when warm. I have work to do on the set up to get the best out of them (I increased camber vs CR500 set up, but went too far and had too much camber on the fronts), so there is even more performance yet to come. I don't yet have timing data (that will come at Spa in June), but the most interesting benchmark I had was a nice tussle with a chap in a Caterham on slicks. In terms of cornering performance, we were very similar... Wear was pretty good too - they will wear out faster than CR500s, but not too shocking.

Thanks for the replies. To be honest, I haven't contacted anyone about the CR500's, but I've been told the 245x13's are nigh on impossible to source.
So in anticipation of this, I'm considering the ZZR's.
The ZZR's also have a size more suitable for the setup on the front of my car, without going to ridiculously wide rims and having lots of kingpin offset.
Living in Mallorca I wont intentionaly be driving the car in the wet, so the wet weather performance is not my primary concern.
Going from the comments above, the ZZR's would seem to be a good choice.
Now all I have to do, is keep pestering Mr. Barnby, so I have something to put them on! rolleyes

Cheers,
Mick. smile

don't over tyre it Mick . there is no need for wider than a 185mm on the road - your only adding unsprung weight, and air resistance.

The ZZR work very well, i've got a set of the "hard" compound on the busa,on 6.5 and 8.5 mag rims and it sits very nicely too.

I raced in ZZRs 2 weeks back. Better grip than CR500s by a mile (alright, second or two), but look at the tread pattern! They were 2s slower than slicks over a 50s lap around Brands Indy (I have like or like data). They need a lot of camber.

I would not want to be caught on the road in them if was raining.

Would agree with Jimmy, although think its nearer 1sec around Brands. Be warned, they are evil in the wet (from experience!)

Thanks for the replies, sorry I've been away for a day or two, been busy as hell!
So you recon they'd be a bit skittish in the wet with 400hp? yesbiglaugh

Have you tried BMTR in Birmingham? I got my 245/40/15 CR500's from them. Admitadly it was some time ago but I will need to source some fronts for mine soon so hopefully there are no supply issues.

Mike, I think it's the 245 x 13's that are hard to source.
No problem with the 15's.

I have just fitted the zzr 's . Garage has set the pressure at 30psi which I think is standard for the tyre. Would this be too high for a caterham. They are 185/60/13 if that makes any difference ? Mix of track and road work .thanks

I think 21 hot is the recommendation. We raced like that and did ok.

Mine are 18 cold. No idea what that would translate into hot.

Re camber - I have 4.5 degrees negative and a bit of toe out. Not sure I like the set up though. Wear across the face of the tyre shows the outer third of the tyre isn't really seeing much of the action. What are other folk running?
