Z06 v 997 turbo
Discussion
About six months ago I sold my 2006 Z06 planning to buy a 2009 - 2010 model in Cyber Grey, however a chance arose to buy a hardly used 997 turbo which had been mildly tuned (530 bhp) at a very good price. Over the years I have owned a number of 911s so felt at home in the turbo within a few miles of driving.Six months later how do I feel about the swap?I live in the south of France where apart from the autoroute A8 the turbo is better suited because of the road widths if this was not the case I would have a Z06.Perhaps a GT3 would be closer to the Z06 in feel but it just does not have the grunt. Performance of the Turbo and Z06 is very close up to 80mph the turbo might have a slight edge.I think it comes down to character the Z06 is a simple car wonderfully executed the Turbo is faultless but a Z06 lives in your memory once it has gone I am not sure the Turbo will.
Is a z06 really that big a car? I know my old mans C class is longer than my Z as I had them side by side in the garage and where the Z fitted with room to spare the C class only had an inch each end.
I know it's wide but surely that's a matter of a few cm over a 997 turbo, not something you'd feel on the road, particularly if both cars were LHD?

I've had many 911's, more than most probably but never a Turbo. I always seem to get very close to signing on the dotted only to pull back. Every time I drive my Z06 I walk away with a smile on my face boring people on how amazing it is to drive (read reasonably hard work, i.e. you actually have to "drive" it) and actually look forward to getting back in it again. Not many cars do that for me.
Only three cars owned really stick in my mind to date. All my Griffiths (for the good and bad reasons but I'd still buy another tomorrow), an SL-55AMG (Like the Griff - just as unreliable but tons of low down usable grunt) and finally the Z06.
I think the new Turbo price has just run away with itself - it is a brilliant car but maybe like the new Audi R8 V10 - another car I keep thinking of buying, they are just, well, too German? (read efficient, pretty well perfect, ever-so-slightly-boring?)

Had a C6 and now have the C5, negotiate the same roads as you (Mougins) and concur on the width for these roads, the SL55 and 4200 are much easier to thread along Route Nap. even Col de vence, but as you say, will be forgotten when sold, where as the Vettes will sit in my memory along with my TVRs, in fact the absence of the TVR has lead me to just buy another but had to loose the Maserati

Looks like I am not alone in my taste for particular types of cars.I did have a 996 C4 and, until I got the Z06, it was my fave car of all. Z06 certainly is now. In theory it's up for replacement this year (so many cars, so little time...), but I'm not sure I can bring myself to part with it.
I also had a brand new Maserati Gransport. DON'T BUY A MASERATI. DON'T!!

You were lucky, I wasn't. Lemon doesn't do justice to it.
Maranello treated me worse than any dealer or indeed any supplier or shop has ever treated me under any circumstances. I wrote to the CEO of Maserati, got an acknowledgement and NOTHING happened. No followup, no action.
Don't buy a Maserati!

Wow, that is very bad. I have to say I have bought many cars from them and they have always looked after me. I have heard similar reports though including one of my main suppliers who bought many Ferrari’s from them and got very disillusioned with their lack of care.
Which have you got anyway? They loaned me the fruity one with black chrome, very loud exhaust etc but I found that whilst it made some fantastic noises it reminded me of the AMV8 - all noise and no go, at least the 4.3Ltr version anyway.

It's mostly down to weight (the car's, not yours Martin ) It weighs the best past of 2 tonnes, so with that little engine it doesn't stand a chance. Shame, because it's a very nice looking car.Which have you got anyway? Hi Gary,
I think you're right there - it does look fantastic and the new convertible amazing. Just been to Camberley Audi - brand new V10 R8 Spyder in black in the showroom. Jen like it too. Hmmm....
Trust you have the 6th of May in your diary? Corvette Curry Night.... !
Was that: "Hmm, where did I put my wallet?"... Looks like I probably won't be able to make the 6th - clashes with a 2-day work event.
