New Showroom tax - Thank's Mr Brown!
Discussion
Another big Thank you to the Labour party-
Cars registered after March 1, 2001 fall into tax bands depending on how much CO2 they emit.
There are 13 bands - these range from band A, which is tax-free, to band M which costs £435 per year. Owners of existing cars will see a maximum increase of £30 or a saving of up to £30.
To find out how much you'll pay from April 1, 2010:
1. Check your vehicle handbook or V5C logbook to find your car's CO2 emissions.
2. Locate the correct amount of CO2 in the table below to find your car's tax band and cost.
Tax band

2010 alternative fuel rate (£)
A 0-100 0 0
B 101-110 20 10

L* 226-255 425 415
M* 255+ 435 425
Cars registered between January 1, 1973 and March 1, 2001 have their tax calculated according to engine size:
• Cars with engines under 1550cc will cost £125 per year
• Cars with engines which are 1550cc or higher will cost £205 per year
New cars
If you buy a new car after April 1, 2010, you'll have to pay a one-off rate for the first year – or ‘showroom tax’ – based on CO2 emissions.
New cars which emit less than 130g/km of CO2 will be exempt from car tax for the first year, but more polluting cars will have higher fees. For example it’ll cost £950 to tax a vehicle which emits more than 255g/km for the first year, then £435 each year thereafter.
The price of tax for new cars will be revised to the following:
Tax band CO2 emissions (g/km) 2010 first-year rate (£) Alternative fuel rate (£)

It is a complete rip-off. The only consolation is that it's a drop in the ocean compared to what some of our continental European cousins pay - I seem to remember the Netherlands is particularly bad. Like all of Labour's taxes, it's designed to screw money out of us without actually being bad enough to change our behaviour (after all, then he wouldn't get the dosh, would he?). I like the idea of a hung parliament, but not in the traditional sense...there'd be rope involved in my version.
Be lucky you don't live in the Netherlands, our government is the best at ripping off their citizens. We used to have a special tax called BPM which made cars 42 percent more expensive than anywhere else. They now lowered the BPM tax and introduced a new one called "slurptax", a tax depending on how much CO2 the car emits thus making cars way more expensive. Who needs enemy's like Al Qaida when you have politicians to ruin everything.
While undoubtably this is bad,it's old news, there was even a campaign wuth a petition to the Prime Minister about it a couple of years ago.
The only thing they changed as far as I can see,is the concession for high emission cars registered up to March 2006 have been banded so they don't pay any more than they do now. That almost made a non retrograde tax.
Still a dastardly move !

I think Ireland is very high too? We seeing you on Wednesday Gary?Corsette said:
Just taxed my 2000 registered C5 from 1st April 2010 - £190.
Ditto my '99. Guess we'd best enjoy it while it lasts! Can't be long before Greedy Gordon slaps some form of punitive taxation on "older, more polluting cars built before 2001". With two on the drive I'm saving £500 a year before I even get out of bed....G4HKS said:

2 Good things......hopefully Labour won't ber around to collect the revenue and second we could all have to tax our cars in the rest of Europe......try Italy for example it would cost about €2000 per annum (almost £2,000) to tax a Corvette.....
or Denmark (for car tax).

Didn't the Government try to change the rules a couple of years ago and didn't it get thrown out that they could retrospectively change the tax banding of cars?

Hi Gaz. I actually dusted off the Z yesterday. Even took it out for its first birthday service to Whitequay in Reading. Bar them wiping it over with a dirty rag, very good job and reasonably priced too.
I also dragged out my OTT Jetwash for the Vette. Covered it in hot Carnauba wax - the results are stunning and very quick to do. If you fancy driving over I'll give yours the same treatment. (For a fee of course....)

I was just reaching for my key-fob until you mentioned the fee I think the dirty rag Whitequay used on yours was probably fine until they used it to clean mine a couple of weeks ago (it was a bit grubby after XX months without a clean...) Mine was in for its second service which was quite a bit more expensive than the first...although a huge chunk of that was the air filter at over £150. Seems to be the Euro-tax again as they're about $95 in the US.I also dragged out my OTT Jetwash for the Vette. Covered it in hot Carnauba wax - the results are stunning and very quick to do. I replaced all of the brake disks and the rear pads on Saturday and fitted the easy release bolts to the rear calipers, the brake disks were worn down about 2mm on the faces and there was a pronounced lip to the edge of the disks so if you are a high miler like mine it could be worth keeping an eye on the disk wear. The rear pads still had plenty of life left in them at 47,000 but I changed to the Hawk pads anyway as I already have the Hawk pads on the front and they definitely seem to release less dust......I also took the opportunity to clean and wax all the wheels.....also discovered the reason for the slow pressure drop on the drivers side rear tyre......a nail sticking out of the tread so took it to the local tyre place and they fixed it for £10
Okay Gary & Nigel; I think I will have to arrange some sort of club night around my place - I'll supply the machine with the chemicals and they can help themselves (with a bit of supervision from yours truly)!
I too have Hawk pads and yes they do throw off less dust as you say. Only having 5k on the clock I reckon I will be waiting a tad longer for pad wear though.
If you are still in the area Nigel why not join us at Thames Valley this Wednesday? Rob is coming over to mine first (and Dave too maybe) late afternoon and then we will go to the Novello. Let me know.

Already planning to be at the TV meet, going to call and visit my M&D as they live about 5 miles from the pub on my way there from work so will probably be there about 8 o'clock.BTW it will be CASH ONLY at the pub that night according to the posting over on the CCCUK website, as the pub is changing ownership and the new EPOS won't be working by then.
I won't be in the vette as I'm in the scabby old Mercedes this week!
