Top Gear features ZR1 vs R8 V10
Discussion
Unfortunately, I can't see this going too well for the Corvette ... especially if Hamster is doing it and he reads EVO.
Shouldn't be too difficult to make lots of smoke though.
My prediction is that they will say the cheaper versions of both cars make more sense and that the R8 is more 'resolved'.
edited to add - and wait for the comments about the 'toilet seat' bonnet.

That bit with JC pushing the rear bumper in with his hand/finger, like he did with the original C6 1 year or so ago when it was on Top Gear, is quite embarassing. Is this normal? I know the body of the C6 is fibreglass, not a type of metal, so is this part of the parcel with this sort of material? ZR1 is full CF right?
How much quicker would the ZR1 be in the dry? It's already quicker than cars costing A LOT more and lapping in the dry (eg SLR).
I think the ZR1 had too much power for such a small, twisty track. I always love the bit where a fast car goes through the follow through and right next to the camera!

I can understand his sentiments entirely and do think the ZR1 is probably overpowered cand overpriced - the Z06 is 8/10ths behind the R8 V10 and that in turn is 7/10ths behind the ZR1. In the real world, does anyone really care? In fairness, they glossed over the fact that the R8 initially left the ZR1 on the line and the ZR1 played catch-up. In the real world, that means it would be behind...doesn't it?
You don't fork out £100k on a car unless it does something for you. the ZR1 clearly does, even if it's simply to put the fear of god into you and wonder if you'll ever tame it. The Audi would be a nice commuter but would probably not excite like the ZR1 and that's what I'd be paying my £100k for. TG is great if you really want to know how to abuse a car and drift it round a track - IIRC Clarkson has managed to break Porsches and Astons too.

It was interesting that it was pitched against the V10 R8, a car that I have seriously been considering. But I reckon I would get bored with it as it's too clinical as my previous experience with Audi's have shown me. To keep the Z06 and have an R8 is an over kill, to sell the Z for the V10 R8 I doubt, would ever happen. ZR1 at £106k? I wouldn't forgive the parts of the car I don't like that I can for the price I paid for my Z06.
Might change my mind when I drive Nigel's though.... (nod-nod wink-wink)

Yes, very definitely. 4WD Audis and ricers are all very quick off the line which, as you say, means real world quick. There's only so much power you can put down through each wheel. However, if you've seen any of the recent enthusiastic articles about the "Balboni" Lamborghini it's clear a RWD car can be more satisfying to drive quickly.
I guess it's a case of pay your money and take your choice! I discovered years ago that the main limitation on road speed in a quick car is not power/handling but visibility. If you can only see 40 yards it's a tad hazardous to travel at a speed which needs 50 yards of braking!

Agree, I can drive my diesel 198lbs of torque taxi on most roads and stay with most cars at safe speeds. It's when you get over that safe speed the going gets reckless, but anyway back to the point of the ZR1. From that demonstration the ZR1 looks a real driver's car and in the hands of a professional driver is very capable of exceeding what an all wheel drive car can do - that's some going from a rear wheel drive car!Z064life said:

I get people doing this to my '87 all the time!! If they want strong, buy a Volvo! If it were a Ferrari, JC would be commenting about intelligent use of lightweight materials!

Maybe supercars need to get over the horsepower race and go back to light weight and fun handling. A new era of -- dare I say it -- economical V6 Vettes, or small light V8's with less power, smaller wheels and tyres, more compact narrower bodies would be the way to go? You can get over burn outs you know.
