Apologies in advance , I'm sure this subject has been covered before , but i wanted to make sure i get the latest up to date information.

Have a friend looking to buy a Corvette in the US early next year (Jan/Feb 2010) and wants to know the costs involved in shipping / importing a car to the UK ?

Also, how long does this process take till actually driving the car on UK plates ?

Thanks,
Nick

Take a look here and do a search as there have been many articles on the subject including SVA work etc

As regards the time to get it on the road, it depends on how much work needs to be done and by whom. For a C3 and if you do the lights yourself, arrange an MOT (assuming it passes) and do the registration at your local DVLA - I did it in a week after landing (and before anyone says anything - yes, the lights still work and no, it didn't burst into flames due to an electrical short.....................)

In my case my Vette was en route for 8 weeks from the West Coast. East coast passages are a tad quicker. I shipped my own and my sons car and the cost was $2000 for the container (flatbed Vegas to LA, container to Chatham)and a further £510 for local fees. I imported tax free as it was my own vehicle but you need to factor that in.

I did my SVA work over a long period of time so cant give an estimate there.

Add registration fees for a new import. Latest rates on the HMRC site.
