Police using Corvette Z06 to patrol North Carolina
RALEIGH — Criminals, beware – there’s a new K.I.T.T. in town.
Pardon the 1980’s Knight Rider television show reference, but the Wake County Sheriff’s Office is racing around in a brand new car. Sheriff Donnie Harrison revealed to local media this week the newest star of the fleet – a black 2007 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. One has to admit the likeness to the car from the show - Knight Industries Two Thousand (K.I.T.T.).
“The car was obtained through order of forfeiture and distribution by a judge, and Wake County through the Sheriff's office now has the title,” said Deputy Wake County Manager Joe Durham. “After use, [the Corvette] must be sold and the proceeds provided to the Wake County Public School System.”
The defendant in the case, Lawrence Creech Jr., was ordered to forfeit the Corvette following his arrest in December for cocaine possession and maintaining a vehicle for the keeping of controlled substances, according to court records.
While the car was free to acquire, some Wake County residents are concerned about the cost of upkeep.
“The car has light bars front and rear, siren, computer, data capacity equipment and other various items similar to all of the other cars in the Sheriff's patrol fleet,” Durham said. “The estimated cost to retrofit was about $8,000.”
Sheriff Harrison said this week that he will use the Corvette as long as it is useful, and does not create a burden to the County. At that time, the car will be sold at auction, and all proceeds will be donated to the County school system.
However, Wake’s K.I.T.T. is already proving useful. The car has been assigned to a deputy on the Drug Impact team. On its first trip out on official business, it nabbed two cars – one carrying marijuana, and the other carrying cocaine. The Sheriff’s office believes criminals will not see the car coming.
