After months of vacillation between a C6 and a XK I have finally bitten the bullet and purchased a C6 pick it up next weekend hopefully. Black coupe
08 model year.
Its going seem a long week.

I would appreciate any advice on the most competitive place for insurance.

The dealer has offered tyre insurance £299 covers replacement of 5 tyres in the advent of punctures or other damage and gap insurance at 499 ensures i receive the invoice price in case of a total loss in the next three years.
I am more than slightly sceptical to the value of these offers.

Once again I would be grateful for any opinion's of the value of these offers
both positive and negative.

join the club at www.corvetteclub.org.uk and you will then get a discount on insurance from a number of suppliers which will more than cover your £35 joining fee! Details are on the Membership benefits page of the website.

Not sure that a C6 has 5 tyres! Mine for example a 2008 C6 Z06 only has four and they are all run flat EMT tyres, I thought all C6's were the same?

I replaced a complete set of tyres and even through the trade they cost me £1600 now a set of stanard C6 tyres won't be quite as expensive but I would still expect a complete set would set you back more than £1,000, so it might be worth the insurance depending on what it covers.

Regarding gap insurance I am never sure they are worth it, I suppose you only ever find out if you total a car which is not a nice thought.

Welcome along by the way! smile

Amen to that, bro...

Welcome to PH and congratulations for acquiring a vette.. I can assure you, you'll wonder why you didn't get one years ago. My '87 gets lot of attention in the expensive end of the hospital car park and easily upstages Europe's finest for all kinds of reasons.

There are plenty of specialist insurance companies who will quote you reasoanble rates, but I've never heard of tyre insurance. Tyres are really a rip off pricewise so it pays to find someone who can supply and fit at a realistic price. At national fitting centres, as soon as you say the tyre is for a Corvette, the price jumps alarmingly. No matter what you want.

My local guy supplies and fits me at a very reasonable price (less than £100) for any tyre I want so £299 sounds a bit steep to me for 'tyre insurance'. Just carry a big can of latex inflater and relax.

Cheers!!

Welcome newbie! I take it you have been talking to Gary Smith at Strats in Birmingham? I just collected a Victory Edition from them and G4HKS (pistonheads) collected a red Z06 cool from them as well in the last month also bought a Caddy CTS from them, That's how all this started with the new Corvettes!

As for the tyre insurance and GAP well worth doing the tyres are about £250 each! and The GAP is really well worth having! You know how much you have saved already on the list price so the GAP will give you the cash to buy another one! This is my 5th Vette and 2nd C6 and I love them.

I did fancy a XKR Conv this time but hey why be the same as everyone else? Plus the Cup holders in Jags have been replaced with poppadom holders instead now TATA own them!!!! You made the right choice with the Vette did you buy the black one in the showroom? lick

Any Information you need just PM me. Also join the CCCUK well worth it. What abouts are you based? We can let you know where you Vette meets are held.clapclap

Welcome indeed! Facing the choice you had to make it was clearly the Corvette - or the end of life as we know it!

Personally I wouldn't touch either of those so-called "insurances" but don't blame me if it all goes horribly wrong...

On the other hand a good place to try for proper car insurance is Adrian Flux. IIRC they'll even give you a discount if you're a member of Corvette Club UK. driving

Welcome chap!

Yep, we know the car you are buying - we saw it several times in the showroom each time we went up to Stratstone to pick our new ones up. It looks great.

I'm sure you got a cracking deal - they must be almost out of them now although there is still at least 1 Z06 in Yellow in the showroom... They even have a new 08MDL year in Yellow convertible with polished alloys etc for a totally stupid price.

Just make sure you get the warranty booklet and the Certificate of Conformity - you will need this if you ever need to sell it on to the EU apparently. In addition, both mine and Robs had two shagged batteries. Keep your eye on it but if it lets you down a couple of times then they should change it for you.

Congratulations. You'll love it.

Never bothered with the tyre and gap insurances myself. I've never had a puncture in 27 years of driving...and the EMT tyres won't last much more than 10K miles so they'll wear out long before you get a puncture anyway!

I'm insured with Privilege, who are pretty good unless you want to make any mods in which case they load the premiums fairly quickly.

Enjoy the car!

Thank you all for the warm welcome and advice.
You are right it is the black one in Stratstones, these cars seem such good value its a mystery why so few are sold in the UK.

Thanks for the heads up with regard to the battery there was an issue with it, it appeared to be totally discharged, if its been left like that for months on end I expect it will be u/s, your experience confirms my concern on this.
I will see if they will replace it.

I will join the CCUK as you suggest the discounts will more than cover the membership fee.

James, I would suggest you INSIST they change it. The problem is that they have had the cars for months (many months) and unless they are left in reverse gear they totally drain the battery to the extent they cannot be recovered. Make sure they give you a proper AC Delco original too. If there is one thing you need to crank a 6Ltr engine over is a GOOD battery. You will be jump starting it forever otherwise.

The pricing issue is short lived. Strats are just clearing out all their stock and selling at a loss in a lot of circumstances. This is great for the few of us that bought in the last couple of months - not so good if you purchased six months ago. But the market has taken a monster tumble since then of course.

This is my new machine from the same supplier in Brum;

You will love the car to bits - just wondered what you have been used to driving?

I think the requirement to stick it in reverse was only for the '05 model manuals (such a bad idea even GM managed to change it quickly!). The battery will drain over time though - if it's an '08 it could have been sitting around for over 18 months and no battery is going to hold its charge for that long.

I agree batteries need a constant duty cycle otherwise the performance deteriorates rapidly and being left discharged for long periods renders them useless.

Your car looks fantastic by the way, I love the wheels on the Z06.

Last two previous drives Impreza WRX and Saab Aero (hence the name, must change that)so it will be a step change in performance for me.

A realization of an ambition/dream so I am really quite excited at the prospect even a little giddy perhaps.

My '07 Z requires shift to reverse before it will let me out of the car, so still a recent Corvette foible. And the battery went flat when left too long when it snowed this winter (less than two weeks) and then it wouldn't hold a charge. (New one from Stratstone fitted by them at my house.)

I too had a Saab....a 9000 Griffin in Black from new in 1996 accelerated faster than a Lambo from 50 to 70 with the full fat Turbo, drove it for 3 years, a great car.

Yup, couple of turbos here too. "Second gear" rhymes with "torque steer"! biggrin

...but at least the back of the car doesn't try to overtake the front.

I would never have tyre insurance... especially if it cost £299! Ask yourself this: how many punctures have you had in your lifetime? I think I've had one in about 15 years of driving, so paying £299 to insure my tyres against punctures that are extremely unlikely to occur would seem like money down the drain. That's my view on it!
