I have a 32 Ford Deuce roadster with an intermittent starting problem:
Its a 305 small block Chevy 1969 I believe.

The flexi plate was worn so that was renewed, and since then its starts 50% of the time:

The battery id brand new, the starter is brand new, the solenoid is brand new, the earth leads are 100% secure, the start runs 100% a ok when powered up away from the block/flexiplate engagement, the starter is shimmed into the correct position and has been inspected on a ramp to ensure thats a ok, (there is an inspection plate to see the flexi plate and starter meeting/engaging a ok.)

BUT half the time the cars starts beautifully, then it clicks like a flat battery, then nothing but all the guages move LEFT negatively as if the power has been cut.

The battery leads are good, the earths are great...BUT this issue is driving me NUTS!

HELP! anyone??

Many thanks

Gary

Does it only happen with a hot motor ? could be heat sink in the starter if not it could be temp related dead short as it sounds like all the power is going into the chassis.
Check the alternator lead has not chafed through somewhere as that does the same thing.

Starter motor is incredibly sensitive to heat, so if it's anywhere near the exhaust/headers it often locks up once hot. I had this on my old C3 (as Vetteheadracer knows only too well)...

Sadly the problem isnt heat related as the fault occurs when cold aas well as hot, and no, no leads are chafing Gary

Sounds like a faulty starter solenoid switch. I had this with my old Cavalier and the only way to start it was to short the starter motor therefore avoiding the solenoid. Try doing this (make sure the car is not in gear and preferably you do it with it on a ramp).

If you try it and the car starts then definitely the starter solenoid switch as the symptoms sound exactly the same.

Gary mate.
you could try running another + feed to the solenoid,so you can eliminate
the ignition switch, and all the harness up to the starter.
thanks again for the viper tyres.
